Meetin’ some mammals… part 9… (Or): Pet my head… pet my head… pet my head… pet my head…

a-1

Pet my head… pet my head… pet my head…

a-2

Pet my head… pet my head… pet my head…

a-3

Oh wait… snacks…

a-4

Pet my head… pet my head… pet my head…

I am sure that none of you need any advice on meeting the canine variety of mammal. So I will just say that I have never met a Bernese Mountain Dog that wasn’t sweet and smart and full of love. Also, they don’t drool nearly as much as Saint Bernards do.

And now, one more random photo of some dogs.

Meetin’ some mammals… part 8… Even more good advice on the art of mammal meeting!

b-1

While it is true that dogs are among the easier mammals to meet, you still need to exercise caution. You could get bit… or just really wet. (Seriously though, dog bites are the most common form of injury to young children… somebody Google that, I might be mistaken)…

b-2

I am proud of those two photos. I crouched down and got just the right angle so the sun would catch the flying drops. And I used the zoom lens, so I wasn’t actually in the spray.

b-3

Hey… how did that picture of an otter get in this post?

b-4

Wait… never mind…

b-5

I forgot I wasn’t doing these in order, so that I could put the best picture at the top… ***Blogging Tip*** If you put the best picture in a post at the top, that is the one that shows up in the reader topic pages, where your posts go in wordpress when you tag them as ‘humor’ or ‘photography’ or ‘free porn’ or whatever. A good picture will increase the likelihood that someone will come and visit your dog… uh… I mean blog…

b-6

But I do like a big finish too…

Meetin’ some mammals… part 7…(Or): You otter behave yourself…

a-1

Yes, yet again I stopped, on my way down the California coast, after my adventures in the Bay Area and a brief stop to help out with my cousin’s kids in Santa Cruz, in Morro Bay, to see the sea otters.

a-2

You should try to see some sea otters. They are another mammal that is hard to get close to… because that water is cold.

a-3This time I didn’t see any babies riding on their mother’s tummies. Wrong time of the year. Everybody was just munching on kelp.

a-4

Because I got up so early… in order to take some pictures of the sunrise for you… the moon was still up.

a-5

I think that is called a ‘raft’ of otters… but feel free to Google that. I could be wrong.

a-6

The zoom lens is so cool. I love the moon picture, and there are some pelicans and seagulls, just hanging out across the bay.

a-7

I highly suggest a visit to Morro Bay.

a-8

I stopped along Highway One to take these pictures. Morro Bay has that huge rock and the factory with the giant smoke stacks. And it is famous as a bird-watching site.

a-9

But it is a lovely little town, and you can see sea otters.

Meetin’ some mammals… part 6… (Or): It hurts my brain when I think…

a-1

Okay, the ‘huts my brain’ part of the title has nothing to do with this post, but it is a good caption for the first picture.

a-2

I don’t have any more funny advice about meeting these particular mammals, since, by law, you aren’t supposed to get anywhere near them.

a-3

All I know is that elephant seals are awesome, so I always stop and take pictures for you when I take the scenic route back from visiting my mom in the Bay Area.

a-4

Depending on the time of year, this one stretch of beach is sometimes a madhouse.

a-5

This time, it was fairly quiet. The young bulls are practicing their fighting moves. The older bulls are gearing up for the big battles to come, when they will have to decide which ones get a harem and which are left to their own devices. There is only one winner on any one part of the beach. The stakes are pretty high.

a-6

It was an absolutely gorgeous morning. The sun had just come up.

a-7

And even on a slow day, the amount of noise is astounding.

a-8

I am glad I had the telephoto lens.

a-9

And now, back to our adventure.

Meetin’ some mammals… part 5… (Or): They aren’t all as friendly as they look…

a-1

Some mammals have adorable faces that make you want to get to know them.

a-2

They might even be the kinds of mammals that appear to enjoy the company of other mammals.

a-3

They can look, at first glance, as though they would enjoy nothing more than a nice, long conversation.

a-4

Once again, looks can be deceiving.

a-5

What appears to be a friendly conversation might actually be the precursor to a serious battle for domination. Never interrupt mammals  during any kind of dispute, but most of all, never get in the middle of a mating ritual. And this also holds true of two-legged mammals. Just sayin’.a-6

Oh, and some mammals are actually protected by law from being disturbed, annoyed, bothered, pestered, or messed with in any fashion, and, you should be aware of that… particularly when it comes to 1,000-pound, horny male elephant seals.

Meetin’ some mammals… part 4…(Or): If a mammal is looking at you like that, just back slowly away…

a-1

If you find yourself on the receiving end of a glare like that, the chances are that the mammal in question is thinking about eating you. This is probably not the best time to try to introduce yourself to that particular mammal.

a-2

Obviously, this doesn’t apply to me. Mammals love me. Even those two weird cats belonging to my cousin, whom, you might recall, I stopped by to visit on the way back from the Bay Area, so I could help out with the kids.

a-3

House cats aren’t technically big enough to eat you. That doesn’t mean they don’t think about it now and then.

a-4

Those two cats are really very sweet despite their ferocious facial expressions… but I am glad they aren’t the size of tigers.

Even more San Francisco sunset pictures… because Sunday is a slow day… and I have a lot of them…

a-1

That right there might be one of the most beautiful pictures I ever took. Look at that wobbly sun!

a-2

I stayed up on the hill above Berkeley, just a few miles from my mom’s house, for almost three hours.

a-3

I have always said that this is a good spot to go on a first date. If you can’t get at least a little kiss here, it isn’t going to work out anyway.

a-4

But even alone, it is a damn good place to watch a sunset.

a-5

And watch the lights flicker on, one by one…

a-6

Millions of lights…

a-7

My high school buddies and I used to come up here on weekend evenings, just to hang out, back in those enchanted days of youth.

a-8

And I still sort of feel a little younger when I am up there.

It was one of those kinds of days in the Bay Area…

a-1

Okay, I admit it. I am rather proud of that picture. Look at the purple highlights on the water. You can’t fake that. And these photos are the other reason I always go down to Point Isabel when I am visiting my mom… aside from the fact that people walk their dogs there, and I get to meet lots of dogs.

a-2

There is nothing like being down by the bay on a sunny day.

a-3

And I like to get right down by the water, and then kneel down, to show a fish’s eye view. I think it juxtaposes the photos I take of the sunsets from way up in the hills behind my mom’s house.

a-4

Next time, I will try to remember to go down by the water to take pictures of the sunset.

a-5

But you can’t beat cute doggies and the views of San Francisco…

a-6

I’m just sayin’.

a-7

Not to mention the Golden Gate bridge.
