Symphony For The Dribble

A song for Donald tRump

Sung to the tune of: Sympathy For The Devil, by the Rolling Stones

———————————————————–

Why did you allow me to reproduce myself

I’m a man of wealth, not taste

I’ve been president for one long, long year

Sold many a man’s soul away

I was in charge when Nazis marched

They’re fine people too, so don’t you hate

Made damn sure that Paul Manafort

Hid his money, and sealed his fate

Pleased to meet you, hope you guessed my name

But what’s puzzling you, is the nature of my brain

I sit around watching Fox And Friends

They help me make America great again

Everything else is just fake, fake news

It is all just a means to my ends

I rode no tank, and I held no rank

While my bones spurs ached, and Saigon sank

Pleased to lead you, hope you guess my name

Ah, what’s puzzling you is the incompetence of my game

I fired Comey, ‘cause he wouldn’t be homey

Opened a fake school, and sold bad steaks

I shouted out who killed democracy

When after all, it was just little old me

Let me please introduce myself

I’m a man who paid for Russian hooker pee

But I don’t pay my contractors

And I have a penchant for bankruptcy

Pleased to cheat you, hope you guessed my name

But what’s puzzling you, is just the fact that I’m so lame… oh yeah, get down, baby

Just as the charges against me, are all a witch hunt

I drained the swamp, what’s your complaint

I like my daughter just a little too much

Because hey, I never learned to have restraint

I walked in on Miss Teen USA

I admitted your crotches, aren’t safe

I stuck little kids into cages

And my own into the damn White House

I like Vladimir Putin

More than I like my own spouse

So, if you meet me, have some courtesy

Have some sympathy, show some respect

All my well-crafted policies

Will end up with this country being wrecked

Pleased to meet you, did you guess my name

But what’s worrying you is that the country will never be the same

Tell me baby, what’s my name, now tell me honey, do you like fame…

My Yosemite adventure… part 2… Half Dome, a very famous rock… or, well, uh, half of a very famous rock?… a very famous half-rock?…a famous rock half?…

a 1

As I said in the first three posts in this series… what?… yes, I know, this is titled ‘part 2’, but there were two posts before part 1, that were really part of… you know, you should really try to keep up.

a 2

Now where was I before I so rudely interrupted myself? Oh, right, I was saying that, because of all the fires, and the park being closed until very recently, I was almost alone in Yosemite. And that, over two days, let me cover more ground than you ever could on a regular summer day there, where it is just wall to wall tourists.

a 3

This post should illustrate how I drove around the whole length of the valley at least 8 times, stopping and taking pictures of the same views quite often, because things look different as the light moves… or rises, or fades, or whatever.

a 4

So I have photos of things at all times of the day, from all viewpoints.

a 5

I have pictures of the sun rising, and the sun setting. You don’t really get good sunsets in the valley usually. It is too deep. The sun disappears long before it sets over the Pacific Ocean to the West.

a 6

I also made multiple stops to one of the best higher views of the valley… I mean, unless you want to go all the way to the top of the rim… and this photo does show how much smoke was in the air from the fires burning to the Southeast, the East, and North of the valley.

a 7

But those fires did keep the tourist hordes away.

a 8

I will probably never again get to see Yosemite so empty. It was a once in a lifetime deal.

a 9

It was magical.

a 10

And because I had such freedom of movement, I could see any view I wanted to see, from far away, or right up close.

a 11

a 12

a 13

The sun rising behind… or sort of to the side of… Half Dome.

a 14

Completely different in the fading of the evening sun.

a 15

From almost directly below, in mid afternoon.

a 16

Half Dome, being kissed goodnight, brushed by the lips of the setting sun, taken from my private beach. Okay, we will get to that. That is a slight exaggeration, but not much of one. But I think I will do a post about the animals I saw next.

We interrupt our regularly scheduled Yosemite posts to bring you another little adventure, featuring good old-fashioned rock and roll, with a hint of Bay Area liberal ‘screw haters’ attitude…

a 1

Where did I go last night that featured a pinball machine with an anti-racism message?

a 2

Why, to the fabulous ‘Ivy Room’ in Albany, California. And what did I do there?

a 3

I saw this guy play.

a 4

Okay, so you went to this place and saw that guy, I hear you all thinking. But did you go by yourself?

a 5

No, I went with these two guys, whom I have known longer than most of you have been alive. And who is the guy with the guitar, you are obviously wondering?

a 6

He is Eric McFadden. Don’t feel bad. I didn’t know who he was either. Big Johnny told me about him, and suggested we all go see the show. And he rocked.

a 7

There were a lot of musical styles in his music, but it was mostly rock and roll… with a little blues.

a 8

The Bay Area has always been supportive of its artists. There are venues for your art to be seen in.

a 9

And it’s… well… it’s the Bay Area.

a 10

Yup.

a 11

I like that he had different vocalists and guitarists join him on stage for a few songs.

a 12

Unfortunately, those clouds are made up mostly of smoke from fires as far away as Canada.

a 13

I never know where to look when I do selfies… also, I was pretty drunk. But I saw some good friends, and had a blast. And I feel more or less okay today.

a 14

Now, back to my Yosemite adventure!

My Yosemite adventure… part 1…

a 1

Yes, I know, I already did two posts about this adventure, so the title will confuse people. Good. I can’t explain, over and over in every upcoming post, how the fires burning around Yosemite made it possible for me to be virtually alone in the park for long periods of time. I am just going to tell some stories, and share some pictures.

a 2

I took 405 photos on this little adventure, if you include a few before and a few after the park itself. Don’t panic. I deleted a few dozen. HA! I am not going to post all the photos… not right away. I will save some for when I get back to San Diego. I am still at my mom’s house in the Bay Area, and I am planning on having more adventures.

a 3

Also, I have divided up the photos into a few sections. Animals, Half Dome,a few other famous landmarks, and so on, and the rest… which I just called ‘mix’. I am trying to decide how to share the pictures. You know me, I don’t like to do it chronologically. I don’t think of adventures as being that linear. I think of them in segments. So maybe I will do a bunch of animal photos in one or two posts. I might do a sunrise segment.

a 4

Because the park was so vacant, I drove around the entire valley floor at least 8 times, stopping wherever I wanted, taking every small detour. I got out and walked into the woods, or over a bridge, or into a meadow, as the mood struck me.

a 5

Look, a young male deer… or buck. Don’t get excited, I have better photos of deer than that.

a 6

I stopped at the same places multiple times. I did it for a reason. Yosemite looks completely different depending of the light. Half Dome, seen there to the right, is not the same in the early morning as it is in the afternoon or evening… as you will see.

a 7

So I might do a post with nothing but pictures of one rock formation, as seen over two days.

a 8

And I need to explain how I ended up staying overnight in the park, which was not my original intent.

a 9

So don’t worry if you start to see pictures of the same thing over and over. There are no repeats. Each was taken in its own context.

a 10

I will tie everything together with stories and observations and my usual witty banter.

a 11

It will be fine. Look, a white, sandy beach. Bet you didn’t expect to see that. And that beach was all mine, just outside of my front door.

a 12

I hope you stick around for this. Like I said, I might stretch it out for weeks or more. I do still have to make fun of tRump, and have more adventures, and do… whatever it is I do on this blog when I am not turning it temporarily into a travel blog.

a 13

There is one thing I cannot do, even with all these photos. I can’t make you grasp the sheer immensity of the surrounding rock formations. If you have never been in Yosemite valley, no glossy magazine article, no National Geographic television series, can capture the grandeur, the scale, of those imposing cliffs.

a 14

In fact, if anything. photos taken from the valley floor tend to make the cliffs less than overwhelming. See those ‘bushes’ on the ledges up there? Those are towering pine trees.

a 15

And when you take photos showing the trees on the valley floor, they always look closer to the cliffs than they really are, so the cliff looks like it is just a few times taller than the trees. This is all very deceptive.

a 16

A bear! Yes, I saw a bear, In fact, I saw the same bear, in two different places, two days in a row. Even the park rangers were amazed by this.

a 17

Telephotos lenses add to the confusion of size and scale. They make things look smaller too.

a 18

I wish I could have taken the time to drive up to the rim of the canyon, and taken some pictures looking down into it. But that is a long drive. And it was smokier up there. Okay, you see the huge trees across the meadow. Those are mostly at least 100-or-more-feet-tall. Then you look behind those, at the base of the cliff. That angled ramp of rockfall from over the millennia. It is called ‘scree’. It is just bits of the cliff face that have eroded off because of wind and rain and ice and tree roots and so on. Once again, that ‘brush’ on that scree pile is made up of huge trees, as big as the ones in the foreground. The rocks in those jumbled piles are often as big as houses. Those trees on the top of that cliff are bigger than the ones down in the valley.

a 19

I don’t know if any of that helps you get a mental image of the giant walls that surround this magical place.

a 20

But did I mention that I petted horsies?!!!

Okay, you guessed it, I went to Yosemite… (with some disturbing photos of a smoldering California)…

a 1

I was only planning on doing a day trip, but I ended up staying over night.

a 2

I took a lot of pictures. I have to think about how to present them, and which to post, because this is only the second post about this, and people are already bored.

a 3

As promised, I woke up at 3:30 in the morning. I saw the sunrise long after I had left the Bay Area behind.

a 4

The smoke in the air made the sunrise nice.

a 5

I saw a lot of California, driving East. Miles of golden grass and oak trees…

a 6

I stopped beside a lake.

a 7

I saw a cute old house.

a 8

I saw the coolest sign ever… I don’t know what kind of animal that is, but I want to pet it!

a 9

I saw miles of dead trees from the California wildfires of years past.

a 10

And I saw parts of the Ferguson fire that are still burning.

a 11

They had to put signs along the highway saying not to report these fires, they already knew about them.

a 12

Smoke in the background, burned ground in the foreground to the right.

a 13

It was eerie and heartbreaking. Yosemite had just reopened. The East and Southeast entrances are still closed because of fires. The air reeked of smoke.

a 14

These aren’t the biggest fires in California right now. The whole place is burning.

a 15

As I made my way down into the valley, and it began to open up before me, I knew that smoke was going to play an important part in this story and the pictures I took.

a 16

There would be none of the crystal-clear views you come to expect in Yosemite.

a 17

And yet, the air did clear during parts of the day.

a 18

And the fires had one good effect on my adventure. Yosemite was virtually deserted. Only people from other countries were there, people who had made reservations months or years in advance, and weren’t going to let the fires ruin a once-in-a-lifetime trip to this magical place. Yosemite is hard to do in summer. It is a traffic nightmare. You park and take the free shuttle buses.

a 19

I never had trouble parking. I was on trails and in meadows with nobody in sight. If I wanted to park and pet a horse, or take a picture, I was always able to.

a 20

And that was pretty incredible.

Okay, try to guess where I went on my latest adventure… I will give you some hints…

a 1

There I am, smack-dab in the middle of… my most recent adventure. Try to guess where I went. Here are some more hints.

a 3

The place I went has a river… and some streams.

a 4

Some of these streams fall for quite a distance, so this place has waterfalls.

a 5

This place has some rocks… really big rocks.

a 6

There are deer in this place.

a 7

There are also lots of trees there.

a 8

There are some lovely meadows.

a 9

If you are very lucky, you will see the sun hanging in the sky over this place.

a 10

You might get to pet some horses… or even ride them, which I didn’t… if you are like me, and dogs, horses and babies like you.

a 11

Sometimes the sun is not visible in this place, but do not panic, it is on its way back.

a 12

Did I mention the really big rocks?

a 13

There are also smaller rocks. Some of them are smooth, round, and wet.

a 14

There are water ghosts there.

a 15

There are places to have a picnic… and some huge crows.

a 16

You might see some strange people there… because it is in Northern California.

a 17

And if you are a stealth-ninja animal whisperer like me, you might see a bear!

a 18

There is dead plant matter and small sand grains in the river…

a 19

Which turns into squishy mud that you can sink your size-fifteen feet into… if you have feet that big… which I do…

a 20

And did I mention the really big rocks?

Today, I traveled all around the world, and all I got you was a bunch of lousy flower pictures… part 5… the final chapter…

a 1

I know I am doing too many post today, and I am sorry, but I want to finish. Because I am going to try to wake up at 3:30 in the morning tomorrow, and go on a real adventure… just for you. So I am finishing up with the slower part of my vacation to visit my mom in the Bay Area for her 95th birthday, during which I have stayed close to home base.

I did see some cool stuff at this, the second of the two botanical gardens. Like… uh… that thing up there, whatever the heck it is.

a 2

I saw vine-covered redwoods.

a 3

I saw another lizard.

a 4

I tried to take the perfect photo of sun-dappled moss.

a 6

I saw jungle that reminded me of Maui.

a 7

I saw delightful little waterfalls.

a 8

I saw a little pagoda shrine in a shaft of sunlight.

a 9

I saw this crazy gnarly tree.

a 10

I broke out into the open and saw… wait… well, never mind, San Francisco is supposed to be over there across the bay, but the fog is still in the way.

a 11

I saw bad cacti being kept in cages.

a 12

I saw bamboo from above…

a 13

I saw bamboo from below.

a 14

I saw Japanese Maple that always reminds me of a pot plant.

a 15

I saw flowers growing in the water…

a 16

And I saw flowers growing over the water.

a 17

And craziest of all, after all those trips to visit my daughter in Arizona without ever seeing more than one or two cacti blooming…

a 18

I saw a bunch of those very same cacti…

a 19

Blooming their spiky little asses off.

a 20

Go figure.

a 21

You have to laugh.

a 22

And that brings this rather small adventure to an end. going full circle to this…

a 23

A giant Saguaro cactus. Now that reminds me of Arizona, and visiting Jessica and her husband, Jason, who just moved to New York, you might recall, and that might lead to some new adventures when I can get time off to visit them there. Now, I will leave this garden, and who knows, on the way home… maybe…

a 24

Nope. Still can’t see San Francisco.

a 25

Not even with the zoom lens.

Okay, I probably won’t even be able to post at all tomorrow, but when I get back… watch out.

Today, I traveled all around the world, and all I got you was a bunch of lousy flower pictures… part 3… starting with flesh-melting carnivorous flowers of doom!!!

a 1

Okay, the title might be a little over the top, but these pitcher plants do indeed lure insects into their vases, and then slowly dissolve them in a pool of digestive juices. We are now officially in the part of this series where I traveled all around the world… but first, a quick jump back in time…

a 2

Because, to get here… to the garden of death… I had to drive a few miles. And that drive took me to some of my favorite spots in the Berkeley Hills, overlooking the Bay and San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. You have all seen my sunset and city lights photos from here. I go there every time I come back to visit my mom.

a 3

See, look at that stunning view of San Francisco!

a 4

Okay, that one up there is an interesting tie-in with the past. Last summer, we came to the Bay Area to see the musical, Hamilton. On one of our city adventures, we rode that jet boat in the bay. While we were waiting in line, I spotted smoke way over on the other side of they bay, the side I grew up on. I said that it looked like it was burning near one of my favorite view spots. You can still see the burned part, right in the middle… sort of. Black stumps sticking out of the summer-browned grass. I know, I did a post about all this as it happened. I have pictures of the smoke, and we drove up here soon after and took better pictures than this.

a 5

Whateverman. Is that the Scottish moors? No.

a 6

But fog is such a part of the Bay Area.

a 7

Now, back to the flowers.

a 8

So many flowers.

a 9

There really are flowers from all over the world… even in summer. I didn’t take a photo of each sign. Signs are boring.

a 10

I did take a picture of this sign… just to tease you. I am not doing more rose photos, especially wrinkly old roses, even though I do now officially own a small squirt bottle to make fake dew drops the next time I do take rose pictures. I bought it, and put it in my camera bag.

a 11

So, yeah… flowers.

a 12

Look, I’m in Asia now!

a 13

Sorry.

a 14

I get distracted. No more words. Just flowers.

Today, I traveled all around the world, and all I got you was a bunch of lousy flower pictures… part 2… (including a picture of a rock that looks like Darth Vader)…

a 1

Okay, the title of this post is a total lie. First of all, I didn’t travel around the world today… that was yesterday now. Because it is the next morning. Also, this post contains not one single photo of a flower. This is finishing up the pictures from that first botanical garden I went to, that has only native Californian plants, and I shared all the flower ones yesterday. But the Darth Vader rock, I did not make that up… just wait for it.

a 2

Once again, it is summer. The end of summer. Not the best time for flowers.

a 3

Ooooh… a Spanish moss-covered branch!

a 4

And an old wooden fence covered with lichen.

a 5

There is still color, even when you can’t find a flower. Leaves, getting a jump on spring.

a 6

Or the strange, muddy-red of a manzanita.

a 7

But this post points out two things. First of all, when I was young, like most of us, I guess I took nature for granted. I had no idea these botanical gardens, so near to where I grew up, were so freekin’ big! I don’t think I ever made it all the way to the back of either one of them.

a 8

I guess I got bored with nature, and wanted to move on.

a 9

See, I found a rock that looks like Darth Vader!

a 10

Cacti! That is the other thing that this garden highlights. California has everything! Snowy mountains, deserts, old growth redwood forests, beaches with swaying palm trees. And everything in between.

a 11

See, there is a palm tree right there.

a 12

Even this lizard seems enthralled bu the beauty.

a 13

It was really almost magical.

a 14

What do you know, there is a grove of Giant Sequoia in there.

a 15

There are redwoods, and… uh… other trees.

a 16

There is an entire hillside covered with majestic oaks.

a 17

I walked a lot further than I thought I was going to yesterday.

a 18

I found myself wishing that my daughters were both there.

a 19

Okay, now we can move on to the other botanical garden, with plants from all over the world.

a 20

Get ready for some more flowers!
