We now return to our regularly scheduled broadcast… of whatever the crack squirrels living in my head tell me to do…

The end of my most recent California adventure… (or): Oil wells, Joshua trees, and weird rocks, oh my…

a 16

I am back from my latest adventure to the Bay Area. I know, this looks like another selfie I already posted, but it isn’t. Just a good photo of San Francisco from the hills on the other side of the bay… with me in it. YAY!

So, you may remember that I told you about the coastal highway of California being closed in the middle, due to a huge earth slide. It might be closed for a year. So, instead of taking that route, and showing you, once again, pictures of elephant seals and the Pacific Ocean as seen from the cliffs high above it, I had to head inland after leaving my little cousins in Santa Cruz.

a 17

Sorry, one more photo of the San Francisco Bay, while I explain how my Google maps on my phone sent me East from the coast, and back to Highway 5… yes, the long, boring, but fast route that we usually take to the Bay Area. The one that runs lengthwise up the Central Valley. But when I got to the top of the mountains just North of Los Angeles, I hit traffic… way up in the pass… which, I assumed, meant that I would be in L A traffic for a week or more.

a 1

But I wasn’t. I, along with hundreds of other drivers and a bunch of big rig truckers, were directed off the highway by a Highway Patrol cop. The whole freeway was closed, because of some big fire.

a 2

The next thing I know, I am heading East on some little, two-lane highway, along the spine of that mountain range. I had always assumed the mountains extended to either side of that pass like normal mountains… you know… pointy and lumpy and reaching for the sky.

a 3

But, it turns out, the whole top of that mountain range, at least this part of it, was actually shaped like a huge trough.

a 4

It was split down the middle into a huge, shallow valley. First, I saw thousands of little oil wells. This struck me as odd. If you drill for oil on the top of a mountain range, don’t you have to drill all the way down past the level of the base of the mountains, and then down from there to the oil? I guess not.

a 5

Next, I drove through miles of Joshua trees.

a 6

If you want to know about them, you should Google it.

a 7

All I know is that in one post I did, a few days ago, I promised I would show you a part of California that you have probably never seen before.

a 8

After a while, I ran into these strange rock formations.

a 9

I think it is sandstone.

a 10

Sandstone is very soft, so the rock weathers in interesting ways.

a 11

There were also lots of little holes and caves in them.

a 12

And I liked the way they projected out of the surrounding dirt.

a 13

Anyway, that is about it for this part of my life.

a 14

My younger daughter is graduating high school today, and I got stuff to do.

a 15

Carry on, and try to have an adventure. See something you haven’t seen before, and share it with us.

Time to say goodbye to my little cousins…

a 1

I am going to miss those little guys.

a 2

Pay no attentions to what my shirt says… or the stick from the almost-finished, chocolate-covered banana in my hand… that was a great day to get out of bed.

a 3

Campbell is so close to learning how to walk… (Note to self: The ‘no shaving’ look is okay when on vacation, but if you are going to turn your head while someone is taking your photo, you might want to shave the back of your neck… or don’t turn your head at all, because you have that weird neck vein thing when you do that)… But seriously, when an almost-one-year-old looks at you like that…

a 4

Or a three-year-old offers to share his ice cream cone with you…

a 5

Does it really get any better than that?

a 6

I had a great time in Santa Cruz.

a 7

And I had a great time with my mom in the Bay Area.

a 8

But it was time to move along.

A kid… at an amusement park… part 2…

a 1

Yeah, still more pictures of my little cousin Clark, the long-haul trucker, at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.

a 2

Hey, somebody has to haul freight.

a 3

If you are ever in Santa Cruz, California, stop by the Boardwalk. It is right on the beach, with a river on one side.

a 4

You will enjoy it… especially if you bring kids.

a 5

Still not sure if that is funny or not, in a place where people surf… and they have actual Great White Sharks.

a 7

Okay, I only have one more post worth of pictures of my two little cousins.

a 8

And then one or two posts about another strange diversion on the way back to San Diego.

a 9

Ice cream!

A kid… at an amusement park… part 1…

a 1

The last day of my most recent adventure, and I am at the Santa Cruz boardwalk with my cousin Clark, and his mom, my other cousin, Mallorie.

a 2

Clark is at the interesting age of three… when they can ride a dragon roller coaster…

a 2a

And not be too scared.

a 3

But they still enjoy the little-kids rides too.

a 4

I miss having a three-year-old around my house.

a 5

The bouncy car ride looked fun.

a 6

But I don’t really fit in a lot of rides.

a 7

But it was still a fun day for me, too.

A grouchy cat, a minion in tie dye, a hungry shark, some flowers, and some psychedelic cavemen… sort of…

a 1

We have reached the last day of my latest adventure to the Bay Area. I was still in Santa Cruz, visiting my cousins,

a 2

While I waited for everybody to get ready to go out to breakfast, I took a few pictures of one of their cats.

a 3

Niles and Frasier are very sweet…

a 4

But you would never know it from looking at them.

a 5

Since I wasn’t leaving to come back to San Diego until after lunch, my cousin Mallorie and I decided to take little Clark to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. No, that isn’t a psychedelic caveman, that is a regular, plastic caveman.

a 6

Ha! A minion in tie dye.

a 7

And a hungry shark… although, a shark eating a surfboard… in an area where people surf… and they have real Great White Sharks… seems a little odd.

a 8

Some flowers.

a 9

I like flowers.

a 10

See, now those are some psychedelic cavemen.

a 11

I knew these photos would turn out this way, because I took them from a moving train, in the dark, without a flash.

a 12

But I wanted to do this, because it ties in with those pictures I took of San Francisco, lit up in the dark, and how I tried to use the tripod I got to eliminate exactly this kind of problem.

a 13

Plus, these just look cool.

Patchy the dog, and my two little cousins…

a 1

Okay, time to say goodbye to Patchy the dog, and get back to my two little cousins.

a 2

Well there they are, Clark and Campbell, with their mom and dad. We missed seeing them at Christmas, because one of the little ones was sick.

a 3

I hope you like kids as much as I do, because I have a lot of photos… ha! Clark loved his new fox.

a 4

But the best present I brought to Santa Cruz, was the electric, light-up spinny thing.

a 5

Tie dye never goes out of style, especially in Northern California. And that ties in well with my sixties-themed adventure in San Francisco, right?

a 6

Campbell liked Clark’s new toy too.

a 7

Yeah he did.

a 8

Spinny lights!

a 9

Awwwww…
