Why did we go to such time, effort, and expense to put new grass in our backyard?
Why are there decorations and fancy tables?
Why are all my tikis set out?
Why are there uplifting quotes on the fence?
Why is there a sparkly curtain set up?
Why did we rent a margarita machine?
Why is there so much good food?
Why are there cupcakes?
And why is my best little buddy Olivia all dressed up?

Just a beach, in Southern California. Backlit waves curling in the sun.
The Pacific Ocean, looking both warm and inviting, and yet still awesomely powerful.
Foam glistening and writing in the light.
A setting as calm as a formal garden, and as wild as a jungle.
La Jolla in the distance.
There were people there, enjoying the late afternoon.
Mollie and her boyfriend Ben were there.
That cool bird was there. Is that a Lesser Egret?
The moon was there.
But mostly, the ocean was there.
And the endless rhythm of the waves.
We went to the beach here in San Diego last evening.
I became fascinated by this lone bird. I don’t know what kind of bird it is. I could look it up. My mom would know.
But he… or she… was so stately, so elegant.
But also very busy looking for food.
Not the worst life a bird ever had.
But a lot of work. A whole, lonely little shore life going on.
A lot of pacing back and forth, and wading, and peering.
Oh sure, there were other birds. Lots of seagulls.
A flight of pelicans.
One lone floating pelican.
But I kept coming back to this bird.
That is some world-class break dancing!
I mean, even with the ball, it is still kind of funny…
Sure… why not?
Well that isn’t very funny at all!
Maybe that should be an Olympic sport.
Makes at least as much sense as that does.
