Remember my post the other day… the shameless one… no… the other shameless one… yes… the one where I suggested that if you all bought a few of my books… available as links if you click the pictures of the books in my sidebar… that we could look at it as a form of crowd-funding and it would keep me from having to get a minimum wage job… which would cut into my blogging time…?
Well, someone, and I apologize for not remembering who, mentioned that since I told you all that I only make a few dollars off each copy of my books I sell, that it wasn’t going to be enough to help.
But the thing is… and you know how I do love my ‘things’… that, while there is some obvious truth in that statement, there are other factors to consider.
If, as I have so far, I sell a few dozen books, then no, it isn’t really making any difference. However, if I manage to sell a few hundred books, then it can make all the difference in the world.
Let me tell you why.
Even a small amount… like a hundred dollars or so… coming in would demonstrate to my wife that all the time I spend blogging is helping me get somewhere. Trust me, this is a good thing.
Also, if I can go to literary agents and publishing houses and can tell them that I have sold a few hundred books, this, according to the ‘Idiot’s Guide To Getting Published’ book that my wife gave me… back when she still supported my crazy idea of trying to make a living with my imagination… will actually cause them to take some notice of me, thereby making me stand out from the crowd and increasing my chances of being published. (A successful blog can do the same thing, which explains my shamelessness… at least in regards to how often I troll the topic pages begging for attention)…
If I ever do end up getting professionally published… with movie rights and book signings and appearances on late night talk shows and all that… then I might actually become well-known… and you can say you helped me…
Isn’t this the dream of all of us who pound a keyboard and spill our hearts and souls out onto blank pages?
I don’t know what the path is. I only know that my head is full of stuff that people might like to share with me. I am not claiming to be a Hemingway or a Tolkien. But I put at least as much effort into being like them as they ever did.
If I do ever succeed, then that means that anybody… seriously… anybody… with an imagination and a dream can maybe be a writer making a living wage… and that is a victory for all of us.
