Wizard magic… part 5… (or); Recycling the wizard!

So how… and why… did I change this…

gad 3To this…

gad 3 eThe why is easy. I needed one more picture of Gadzookes, my little wizard from the new children’s book I am working on, and that wizard right up there is indeed the same wizard in the picture above, believe it or not. The picture on top I copied from the middle of an image I already used. Then, I used my own wizard magic… also known as Photoshop… to do a few things… I used a big paintbrush with white paint to remove most of the unwanted parts…

gad 3 aThen, I zoomed way in and used a very small brush to remove the last unwanted bits…

gad 3 bNow it gets tricky. I had to select his left arm, copy it, paste it, and rotate it…

gad 3 cI also slimmed him down by shaving off some of the left side… his right side…

gad 3 dOh, and I also selected the whole bottom half of his beard and copied, pasted and rotated it… that is not as easy as it sounds, by the way. Then, I just changed his eyes shape… and eyebrows… and some other details like the beard and mouth shape… and then darkened the color of his robe and lightened the color of his… uh… whatever you call that long nightshirt that wizards wear… and there you go…

gad 3 eOne brand-new, recycled wizard. I will try to remember to show you the finished picture with the other elements and the background… when I finish it.

Wizard magic… part 4…

gad 21 copyOne more page of the children’s book is done… except for the text… and then formatting it and sending it to the publisher without the usual help from my daughter… and then ordering the first copy… and waiting to get it… and then checking it for errors… and then fixing the errors… and sending for a new copy… etc…

My favorite spams of the week…

  1. ‘Some meter pits are complete of water’… (I sure hope this guy is a plumber of some sort)…
  2. ‘Thanks fօr sharing your thoughts about หนังx. Reǥards’… (Uh… I am not even sure if I did, in fact, share my thoughts on that… but I like that the name of the site was simple and straightforward… it was from a site called; ‘Porn’)…

Wizard magic… part 3… (or);Six hours of work in Photoshop, but hey, it’s for the children!

gad 20 copyWell, there it is. Page 20 of my new children’s book about a cute little wizard who is just looking for a friend. The thing is… and this ‘thing’ is mostly just because I like to try to add at least a few ‘things’ to my posts each week… but when I say 6 hours of work on these two little pictures…

a 1 gad copy 2a 2 gad copy 2…just to turn them into one page of a children’s story, that isn’t the whole story. I mean, there is the time it took me to draw and color the original comic book back when I was a teenager. And I still need to add all the text to these pages. And bear in mind that I am at least going to try to compile, format, and send the whole finished book to the publisher without too much help from my older daughter… who usually does all that for me… and she doesn’t even think I am smart enough to send even a novel with just text, let alone one with a bunch of pictures that all have to be aligned and saved in the correct format and so on…  and she does live all the way in Arizona… so she can’t just walk me through it… and I am a computer moron… so… uh… yeah.

I can’t tell if anybody is enjoying this peek behind the scenes of a book being created. My stats are low, but we all know there are fluctuations. I am tempted to ask if this is boring you, or if you want less details… or more details… or whatever… because this is supposed to be an interactive blog… but, that being said, we all know that I am just going to go right along doing whatever the crack squirrels tell me to do…

Wizard magic… part 2… (or); did you know that Photoshop actually has a tool called ‘the Magic Wand?’

I am still working on the artwork for my new Children’s book about the cute little wizard named Gadzookes.  I have now gotten to the part where I am zooming in to look at individual pixels and do some cleaning up…

a 1a 1 aThe picture on top is a close up of the wizard’s face after I did only the outside cleanup. The second one is pretty much done, ready to be stuck in front of a background… I haven’t decided what background to use yet. It might be just some bright color in a swirly pattern… or maybe one of the scans of some of my watercolor paintings of flowers… or one of the scans of that jungle I painted back when I was playing around with a wood burning set my wife bought me. Don’t worry, we will get to that in later posts.

a 1 gad copy 2This is the full-sized picture I am working on now… well, one of them. This is when Gdzookes, who is still trying to create a friend for himself with magic, made an identical copy of himself, who ends up being sort of a jerk, and now has to be sent back to the magic world.

a 2It is when you zoom in that you see all the work there is to do… remember, these pictures are scanned from really old, really small, hand-drawn pictures. You can see old pencil marks, and places where the colored pencil covers my ink lines, and places where the lines get too fat or thin…

a 2 aThere he is after a little work. I try to retain as much of the hand-drawn feel and look as I can. If anyone is at all interested, I can go into more detail on the upcoming posts about this, tell you what tools I use and so on… but I won’t if nobody cares.

Wizard magic… part 1… (or); Photoshop, it is about as close to magic as we are likely to get in real life…

So, as long as I am working on my new children’s book, I thought it might be fun to sort of show you what exactly it is I am doing to turn an old comic strip I drew way back when I was young into a book suitable for small kids. This is going to be sort of a Photoshop tutorial but hopefully it will end up being a little more interesting than that…

We will just have to see what the crack squirrels that live in my head come up with.

As you may recall, I am using the art from that original comic, changing the story, and adding some new artwork in the form of some watercolor paintings I did while visiting my mom recently.

a 1 gad copySo far, I am spending most of my time scanning the original comic in 300 dpi… (which, I think, stands for dots per inch)… so that I have these huge versions of small pictures to work on. Also, that is the resolution that my self-publishing firm recommends. Remember, I am going to try to send this book in without the help of my tech-support daughter.

a 1 gad copy 2The first step is using the Photoshop paintbrush tool to clean up all the background text and smudges.

a 2 gad copya 2 gad copy 2This is fairly easy and straightforward at first. I can use a big setting on the brush and just work pretty fast.

a 3 gad copya 3 gad copy 2But of course nothing is ever quite that simple…

a 5 gad copya 5 gad copy 2I can’t leave any left over dots and bits of old… whatever… in the images, or when I select them later to put a background behind them, I will have to clean all that up anyway. Also, these images are really quite small…

IMG_4436 They are a combination of watercolor and colored pencil with black ink outlines. When you look at them in the original, they look fairly clean. And yes, I did cut up and destroy the original 6 page comic to do this. It just fit on the scanner better that way.

a 6 gad copy

a 6 gad copy 2But it is when you scan the images at high-resolution and then zoom in that you begin to see how much work there is to do.

a gad 6 close 1Yes, that is indeed the floating eyeball of a wizard that is being banished back to the other realm… Zoomed in this close you can see that I have now changed my brush tool down to a very small… sometimes just one pixel small… size. Then I have to get rid of all those old pencil lines and smudges and bits of colored pencil that escaped to outside the lines.

a gad 6 close 2That is a good start, but I have to go all around the outside of every part of every one of those pictures zoomed in really close, covering mistakes with magic white paint. Next I have to complete the process… of this first stage… by going around and darkening the outer ink lines… or thinning them… or getting rid of paint or colored pencil that covers them…

I hope you come back for that.
