Two cute kids… and a cute dog…

a 1

So I pulled into Santa Cruz… on my way from the Bay Area back to San Diego… and found my two little cousins at the park. That is Campbell.

a 2

And there is Clark. Unfortunately, I got there right before nap time. They were having some work done on their house, so the kids took naps at a neighbor’s house. I went back to their place to wait… and I met this guy…

a 3

That’s Patchy… the dog…

a 5

He belongs to one of the contractors, and was tied to a truck in front of the house… in the shade… with water.

a 6

We sort of hit it off.

a 7

Okay, not the best picture of me ever.

a 8

But it was awesome.

a 9

This is what selfies are supposed to be like.

a 10

Oh yeah. But I was sort of hiding my lips from that big old tongue.

The California coast, from San Francisco to Santa Cruz… part 2… and, technically, the final chapter of the shortest series I ever did… but this one ends with cute kids… so… yeah…

a 1

I know, that could be New England, but it isn’t. It is Northern California, between the Bay Area and Santa Cruz.

a 2

It was only a three-hour drive from my mom’s house in the hills North of Berkeley to Santa Cruz. I don’t know why I don’t take the coast route more often. The other way is boring, and not much faster.

a 3

And look what I have been giving up to fight the traffic, driving all the way along the San Francisco Bay, and through a bunch of small cities and towns making up the South Eastern Bay Area.

a 4

A fishing boat, and the ever-present looming fag bank, getting ready to move in and smother Northern California.

a 5

Now granted, it isn’t like I drive from the Bay Area to Santa Cruz all the time. It is only when I go to the Bay Area from San Diego to see my mom, and I decide to stop by and see my cousins. It is out of the way, but as you will see, it is worth it.

a 7

It was especially worth it when I went there to help out, when the newest little cousin was colicky and not sleeping much at all. You could go back and look at earlier posts if you are interested.

a 8

But the real point I am trying to make, is that if you have to drive far out of your way, you might as well enjoy the drive, and also, hope that you have people who love you waiting at the other end…

a 9

Like these little guys… who you will learn all about tomorrow.

The California coast, from San Francisco to Santa Cruz… part 1…

a 1

Horses, munching by the Pacific Ocean. I must be losing my touch. I stood by the fence, and did that tongue-clicking/tisk tisk sound, but none of them came over to see me. This is unheard of. Dogs, babies, and horses love me.

a 2

I always love it when I do a bunch of travel posts, and get new followers from other blogs that focus on travel or photography or whatever. We all know that, before too long, I will be back to doing weird Photoshop stuff with Trump, and my other silly stuff, and they will be wondering what they have gotten themselves into.

a 3

So, after leaving the Bay Area, I was traveling down the coast on Highway One, also known as the Cabrillo… (Pronounced ka-brie-yo, and named after a Spanish explore who charted the area)… Highway. Yes, this is the same highway you have seen pictures of before, when I stopped in Santa Cruz to visit my cousins. But this is the part on the other, Northern side of Santa Cruz. Less tall cliffs and giant Elephant Seals.

a 4

I might have traveled that other part again, the next afternoon after leaving Santa Cruz, but unfortunately, Highway One is closed… for perhaps the next year… between Santa Cruz and Southern California due to a huge landslide. And this won’t be my only forced detour on this last part of the trip.

a 5

This is Northern California. This isn’t the warm waters and palm trees of the other end of the State. This is water so cold it will kill you in less than an hour, with Great White Sharks, sharp rocks, dangerous currents and fog banks. In fact, if you want to read about my most interesting near-death-experience, it took place on a ship right off the coast not far from here. It is funny, I mean, considering I almost died. Go to the search bar… no, the one on my blog, not on the reader topic wall thing, and type in: ‘What a way to go’… go on, we will wait for you. Read the post.

a 6

But all that aside, the coast of California is something that everyone should see once in their life, from one end to the other.

a 7

If you look closely, you can see seals on those rocks… hiding from the Great White Sharks.

a 8

You can see the highway way over there.

a 9

And, as nice as the Pacific Ocean is, the view to the East wasn’t too shabby either. Okay, one more post of the coast, and then, Santa Cruz, and my cute little cousins and an adorable dog.

Bye bye, Bay Area… part 2…

a 1

And so we say goodbye to the city by the bay, as seen from Treasure Island… no, not the one with the pirates…

a 2

I hope you enjoyed this part of my adventure, the cute dogs, the sunsets, the weird sixties stuff, the dive-bar hopping.

a 3

No, that isn’t the same picture as the one in the other post. I guess I took two with my phone, and there is never any sense wasting a picture of me!

a 4

Okay, I may have taken that photo of the newest, tallest, unfinished building in the city, while driving over the Oakland Bay Bridge. Don’t take pictures while driving.

a 5

You may recall, from the previous post, that I took the coast route between San Francisco and Santa Cruz. I haven’t done that since I was a teenager or a twenty-something. What is that? I’m glad you asked. That is an old, cement, coastal defense bunker. The wind and rain have eroded the dirt away from around it. It is also heavily covered with graffiti.

a 6

I would deny that I took that photo while driving… except for the blurry post and guard rail… and the cars coming up behind me in the rear view mirror.

a 7

I don’t know what that is… but it looks like the world’s biggest golf ball on the world’s biggest tee.

a 8

Half Moon Bay, and some boats.

a 9

I like boats.

Bye bye, Bay Area… part 1…

a 1

There I am, with San Francisco over my shoulder, on the morning I left my mom’s house… which was like three or four days ago now. No, I didn’t take that at my favorite dog park down by the bay, where I took the photos in the last few posts. I decided to ignore my ‘fastest route’ option in the Google maps, and have an adventure.

a 2

I was heading for Santa Cruz, to see my cousins, and decided to drive the coast route, which I haven’t done in years. So I swung onto the Oakland Bay Bridge, heading for the city, and stopped off in the middle of the bay, on Treasure Island… where they filmed the Myth Busters TV show. The bridge  which you can see to the left, actually passes though a tunnel cut into the the island.

a 3

There is the other end, connecting to Oakland. That part is new, and it was a huge boondoggle, costing the locals way too much, and built with steel from China. You should Google that story.

a 4

But it was a beautiful morning. That, right over there, is the waterfront that I walked along at the start of my big adventure day in the city, that ended up with me and my friend hopping from dive-bar to dive-bar.

a 5

The Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz.

a 6

I love boats, have I mentioned that before?

a 7

A good shot of Alcatraz Island, and the old prison, thanks to my trusty telephoto lens.

a 8

Okay, we are ready to hit the road.

The many moods of San Francisco… the final chapter…

a 1

All things considered, my experiment with taking pictures of San Francisco with a big zoom lens, while using a tripod, worked fairly well.

a 2

I just wanted some photos of the city lit up at night, without the bouncing effect that I usually get when I hold the camera, but the darkness keeps the shutter open for longer. As you can see, it is an improvement, but gusty winds still produced some movement.

a 3

The ones where I wasn’t zoomed in so tight were better.

a 4

What I really need to do is stop being lazy, and learn how to adjust the shutter speed myself, instead of using the automatic settings.

a 5

But I am lazy, and if I learn something new, and don’t do it very often, I forget how.

a 6

Oh well.

a 7

I still had fun, and that is a good photo of a garbage can.

a 9

Well, that is pretty much it for my latest adventures in the Bay Area. Next, we say goodbye to the City by the Bay, and I start driving South. Don’t worry, I did some new stuff and some cool stuff. I drove different routes, saw cute kids, met a cool dog, and got diverted because of a huge landslide and a big fire.

The many moods of San Francisco… part 4…

a 1

So, yeah, using the tripod to shoot pictures of San Francisco from way over across the bay worked out pretty well.

a 2

There were a few problems. It looked dark to me, but the camera still picked up light from the recently-set sun.

a 3

And visibility, as is usual in the Bay Area, was not optimal.

a 4

But I had fun.

a 5

And at least there wasn’t a thick fog covering the bay.

a 6

It was really a beautiful night.

a 7

Maybe if I wait just a while longer…

a 99

Okay, one more post of these, and then, I begin my adventure back to San Diego.

The many moods of San Francisco… part 3…

a 1

Okay, so there was a reason I went down to the bay on my last night in the Bay Area, to that beach where I usually take the pictures of all the dogs… and to pet them when I miss my dog.

a 2

I was playing with my telephoto… zoom… lens, as you might have been able to tell from the first picture.

a 3

Look, you can actually see the old civil war-era fort, under the big arch at the South (left) end of the Golden Gate Bridge.

a 4

But I also went down there to play with something else. No… not that… why you gotta be like that?

a 5

I found a tripod at a rummage sale… four dollars… and I wanted to try taking pictures of San Francisco as the lights were coming on. I had mixed results, as you will see from upcoming posts. It turns out that, if you have a big telephoto lens, and zoom way in on a distant object, any small wind is enough to blur the picture… but not as much as some of those dancing-light-ball pictures I have shared before.

a 6

It worked great for most of the shots I took.

a 7

And the sunset was pretty.

a 8

Well, you will see what I mean tomorrow. Here is one last photo that came out pretty good, especially when you think back to the post I did where I tried to take photos of the lunar eclipse. Holding the camera in my hand, it felt steady. I just got those crazy photos of multiple moons dragging trails across the sky. But check this one out…

a 9

That is the moon. I think the light side was too bright for a good picture, unless I was better with the camera and knew how to set the exposure… because at night, in the dark, the shutter wants to stay open a long time, and the camera can’t move at all. But if you look at the middle of the moon, you can actually see craters. How cool is that?

The many moods of San Francisco… part 2…

a 1

I went down to the bay on my last night in the Bay Area, for a specific purpose…

a 2

But I can explain what that was in another post, because I have at least two more posts worth of pictures from that night.

a 3

So for now, just enjoy the pictures.

a 4

This is another mood of San Francisco.

a 5

The quiet of nightfall without any fog.

a 6

That mountain is called ‘the sleeping maiden’, and has been since the time of the Native American tribes in the Bay Area.

a 7

A large boat leaving the bay under the Golden Gate.

a 8

Shifting colors.

a 9

The setting sun hitting the buildings on the sides of San Francisco’s many hills.

The many moods of San Francisco… part 1…

a 1

We are reaching the end… well, I say that, but I still have a lot of photos to post before the end actually happens… of my latest adventure in the Bay Area. And then, I had a lot of adventures on the way back to San Diego, so I am going to be posting a lot over the next few days. Just look at the stuff that interests you, and don’t worry about the rest. Or don’t read the words. It’s all good.

There is San Francisco… in the far distance, over my right shoulder… at her sunny, brightest best. I took the selfie with my phone, on the way to take my mom shopping for shoes, which took us over the hills above Berkeley. This was the day after my drinking adventure over in the city, and I was pretty hung over. Ha!

a 2

Even when the city is basking in the sun, the fog still waits beyond, to come creeping in.

a 3

Okay, that picture, and the next few, are just the last sunset photos I took from my mom’s deck, and don’t really relate to San Francisco directly.

a 4

Except maybe for the fact that the fog you see, both below and above the mountains in the distance, which are just North of the Golden Gate bridge on the far side from the city, have already blanketed the city by the bay. And also due to the fact that when I took these, I was still hung over from the day before, when I was in the city.

a 5

Okay, that was a stretch.

a 6

But bear with me.

a 7

We can get through this.

a 8

I went to visit my best friend’s memorial tree. I can’t believe the tiki-steak I carved for him is still there. I turned around and took these last two photos…

a 9

Hey, that actually is a picture of San Francisco. You just can’t see it because of the fog, which is certainly one of San Francisco’s charming moods. You can see a little white blob in the bay, to the left of center. That is Alcatraz. The city is behind and to the left.

a 10

And there, believe it or not, is the Golden Gate Bridge. Just behind that big ship.
