Okay… I swear… this is the last reflecting water post… that contains a waterfall… HA!

A rose garden, a sunset, and a city by a bay… part 1…

a 1

Another thing I like to do when visiting my  mom in the Bay Area is drive up to the Berkeley Rose Garden. It is part of the University of California, Berkeley, and rose breeders from all over the world send clippings there, so you see roses that might only exist in two places in the world.

a 2

It also has some nice views, although it was rather hazy yesterday.

a 3

This is why the blog is so good for me. I go out and do stuff, so I have pictures to share with you.

a 4

The thing is… (hello, thing, where have you been hiding?)… I tend to take a lot of pictures. I try to get rid of the boring ones, the repetitive ones. But I do hate wasting them. which is why we end up with so many posts labeled as part 1 and part 2 and so on.

a 5

But you know I have crack squirrels living in my head, right? So…

a 6

San Francisco was shy yesterday, peeking out of the haze. But don’t worry… because I did something else yesterday that will peal away the mystery.

a 7

There is a reason that I like both roses and sunsets…

a 8

It is because no two are ever alike, even from one minute to the next, as light changes and moves. Throw in my favorite city, and you have a pretty nice mix… which is what I am going to be doing for a few days… mixing pictures of roses and these photos, that I took from Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay… just as the sun was setting.

a 9

Because that is where I went last night. The thing is… (oooooh, a double thing post!)… that I am going on another adventure today, and I don’t know where I am going to end up… but it will start in those hills just to the right of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Reflecting upon nature… part 19…

The sun, the moon, the fog and the city…

a 1

Okay, here they are, the last photos from my drive up into the hills above Berkeley, California, to watch the sun set last night.

a 2

I also took a few photos of the moon. I think they came out pretty good considering I didn’t have a tripod. I just steadied the camera on the top of my car. I had no idea the zoom lens was that good. I mean, the photos get saved really big, and I cropped the photo all the way down… but you can see craters!

a 3

The fog did play a huge part in these pictures.

a 4

And so did the clouds… and that contrail or whatever it was. But there was, as I mentioned in an earlier post, more than one kind of fog blowing around last night.

a 5

There was a low, coastal fog, that obscured San Francisco, and blew in front of the setting sun…

a 6

It mingled with the clouds and added depth to the photos…

a 8

But when I drove just a little higher up into the hills, I drove into more fog…

a 9

Okay, I don’t actually know if this is high fog or low clouds…

a 10

But whichever it was, it didn’t help the sunset any,

a 7

One more gratuitous picture of the moon.

Reflecting upon nature… part 18…

imageedit_1_4623158209

The amusing irony of these is that you still call it a waterfall, even when, in a still photo, the water isn’t actually falling anywhere.

Huge, swollen flamey balls… part 2…

a 1

Well, I’m sorry, but that is what the sun is… What all stars are.

a 2

San Francisco, wearing a nice, soft blanket in preparation for winter.

a 3

It is hard to tell which are clouds, fog, or mountains.

a 4

But the sun did put on quite a peep show last night.

a 5

I guess that is a contrail above the city. Or San Francisco just launched a missile.

a 6

I never get tired of these.

a 7

I hope you don’t either… wait… is that another contrail? Or is Marin County retaliating with a missile of its own?

a 8

That turkey vulture over the Berkeley hills seems to be rooting for a war… mmm… good pickings.

a 9

But i didn’t see anything in the news this morning about California declaring war on itself… so I guess we are okay.

Reflecting upon nature… part 17…

imageedit_1_3085483852

Ooooh… I like that one. So relaxing. But I have to laugh. I have gotten a number of new followers since I started doing these nature pictures interspersed with sunsets and animal photos. I imagine it will come as something of a surprise to some of them, when I go back to doing my normal abnormal stuff, and they realize that this isn’t a travel/nature/photography blog… for the most part… HA!

Huge, swollen flamey balls… part 1…

a 1

Oh, don’t get too excited. I’m talking about huge, swollen flamey balls of sunsety goodness. But I can’t just keep naming every sunset post I do something about sunsets. It gets boring.

a 2

So last night, as I do whenever I am in the Bay Area visiting my mom, I drove to my favorite spots up in the Berkeley hills to take some sunset pictures. It was a partially foggy and cloudy evening.

a 3

I mean, San Francisco is right over there, but you can’t see it.

a 4

Not even when you zoom in. I knew there was a chance that the fog and clouds would totally obscure the sunset.

a 5

Either that, or they would add to it tremendously.

a 6

I will let you be the judge.

a 7

A bird in the last rays of the setting sun.

a 8

The moon, wishing the sun would hurry up and go away, so that it might get on with its job.

a 9

Okay, I will see you later with more huge, swollen flamey ball photos… HA!

Reflecting upon nature… part 16…

It’s like the nature channel around here…

c 1

Because my brother, who lives with my mom to help take care of her, has adopted three cats, there are bowls of cat food and water both on the deck, and on the table just outside the windows overlooking the backyard. This is why I always end up with lots of photos of raccoons and possums whenever I visit my mom in the Bay Area.

c 2

I didn’t bother to take photos of the blue jays or squirrels this time. But if you ever want to be inches away from a raccoon or a possum, just let me know.

c 3

That is the picture window that overlooks part of the bay, and from which you can almost see San Francisco across the bay. The door to the deck, where I take so many of the pictures of the animal visitors and the sunsets, is just to the left. I am trying to explain why my photos of sunsets taken from the house where I grew up are always zoomed-in shots. If you look out the window, you can see not only some of the overhanging branches of the big oak tree that is growing in front of the deck, but some of the many phone and power lines that crisscross the view.

c 4

If I go to the upper level of the backyard, and shoot over the roof, the oak tree still blocks some of the view. I do avoid the power lines… but I like to zoom in or crop the photos down to just the sunset… because…

c 5

If I don’t, you get a lot of the flat roof of my mom’s house. And the weird chimney cover that always reminds me of a Roman gladiator helmet of some sort… for some reason.

c 6

Anyway, I took all these last night. I just got back from my usual pilgrimage up into the hills above Berkeley, where I took some  more sunset photos… to share with you tomorrow.
