A closer look… part 6…

a 1

More macro photography, but this time, I am not telling you what they are.

a 2

Most of them will be fairly obvious, I suppose.

a 3

But we can still make a game of this.

a 4

Or not.

a 5

Whatever makes you happy.

a 6

But I do have some more ideas for this series before I let it go.

a 7

I did take a few regular pictures of the three macro lens spacer things.

a 8

They look like fancy lenses…

a 9

But there is no lens inside them. They just make your regular lens further away from the lens inside the camera.

a 10

And some how, if you get the manual focus just right…

a 11

They let you take really close up photos.

A closer look… part 5…

a 1

More photos of… uh… stuff… followed by cropped and enhanced versions of the each photo, done in Photoshop.

a 1 copy

Yup, that is the same leaf. I am coming to appreciate the ‘vibrancy’ filter in Photoshop.

a 2

I still think I could all this without the macro lens spacer things. Maybe I will try doing that after I get done with doing this. I am just trying to decide if I need to buy some of them.

a 2 copy

But I do like the super close up pictures, even when they are blurry.

a 3

Our couch.

a 3 copy

An even closer look at our couch.

a 4

The couch again… complete with dog and cat hairs… only from straight above, instead of slightly angled.

a 4 copy

You are going to get sick of this before I do… HA!

a 5

The glass top of a table out in our yard.

a 5 copy

ZZZZZOOOOOOOOMMMMMMM… oooohhhh… I know… let’s play a game later, where you see close ups of stuff, and you have to guess what they are.

a 6

Another rug.

a 6 copy

I brightened that one up a bit, after cropping. Doing this sort of makes you want to vacume and dust more often.

A closer look… part 4…

a 1

I am still playing around with those macro zoom lens spacer things my son-in-law loaned me. That is the top of a plastic drink cooler. But what if I play with the brightness and contrast in Photoshop?

a 1 copy

I don’t know if that is better or not, but it still looks like a brain… covered in dirt particles.

a 2

That is the bark of a pine tree in my backyard. It is hard to hold the camera perfectly still. That, with the very small field of focus, makes this photography challenging.

a 2 copy

So I cropped the picture a little smaller in Photoshop. I also played not only with the brightness and contrast, but with the vibrancy level as well.

a 3

More tree bark.

a 3 copy

More cropping and playing with levels. It is out of focus, but still, a nice photo.

a 4

Our new, fake hardwood floors.

a 4 copy

It does look like real wood now.

a 5

The top of a wicker basket.

a 5 copy

This is fun. I don’t know how much this actually improves the photographs, but I am going to do more of these. Bear with me.

A closer look… part 3…

a 1

More of the photos I took with those crazy lens-spacing macro adapter lens thingies. The ones I borrowed from my son-in-law. And yes, I do grow orchids, and yes, they keep on blooming.

a 2

That flower has a tiny flower inside it… which seems to have a tiny flower inside of it.

a 3

Now, we all know that I love flowers and taking pictures of flowers, but that right there is the leaf of a succulent plant.

a 4

Tiny little spider webs.

a 5

And an ivy leaf.

a 6

I will now share three photos of one of my orchid flowers. This is to demonstrate how small the field of focus is when you take these macro zoom photos.

a 7

Only a small area is actually in focus. This is tricky, especially if anything… like the flower or my hands on the camera… are moving at all.

a 8

I am starting to wonder if I could achieve these same images using the camera without the macro spacer lens thingies. Just back it up a little. Or maybe use my telephoto zoom lens from even further away. Also, the pictures on my camera save at only 72 DPI… which I could probably change if I wanted to… but they are also saved at like 72 inches across in width. This means I could crop a lot of the photo and still have the in-focus part. Tomorrow is a day off, and I am going to try playing with that. Also, I intend to take pictures of lots of random objects with interesting texture.

So, uh, see you tomorrow.

A closer look… part 2…

b 1

Some more of the photos I took, playing with the macro lenses.

b 2

I have learned a few things. I have been too reliant on my auto focus. This is forcing me to master manual focusing.

b 3

Also, I learned that it is hard to do the focusing because the focus field is so small that there is always a lot that is out of focus… especially when the wind is moving the flowers around.b 4

That is an orange skin. Another thing that I learned is that when the lens is right up against something, it tends to cast a shadow and block most of the light.

b 5

A chocolate kiss! Notice how only a few parts of the aluminum wrapper are in focus. This is tricky stuff.

b 6

Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer true! Okay, I have some more flower pictures that I took yesterday. I will post those tomorrow. I need to work for the next two days. But on Friday I will try the macro lenses on some other stuff.

A closer look… part 1…

a 1

Did you notice the bee inside the flower?

a 2

Okay, here is the story. My birthday is coming up. My older daughter asked me what I wanted. One thing was a macro lens for my camera, so I could take photos super close up.

a 3

Her husband, Jason, has some. And they were visiting from Arizona for Easter. He loaned me three of them  of different focal lengths… or whatever it is called.

a 4

Hey, the wind moved the flower.

a 5

So, the thing is… (hey, thing, where have you been hiding?)… that there isn’t actually a lens in a macro lens. It is really just a spacer you add to a regular lens. Then, you have to adjust the focus manually to take a photo.

a 6

I spent the day playing with the three lens spacers.

a 7

It does, when you do it right, allow you to take pictures of tiny little flowers parts inside already small flowers.

a 8

So I am going to keep playing with these lenses for a few days.

a 9

Because maybe, I will be getting one… or some… for my birthday.

I heard this loud ‘whooshing’ sound…

a 1

I was sitting in the gate guard house at my new job as a private security officer for a luxury gated community. I suddenly heard this loud whooshing sound outside. I knew I had heard the sound before, but it was so out of context. I stepped outside and looked around. I didn’t see anything, until the noise came again, from right over my head. This hot air balloon was thirty feet above me. And yes, it is always sunny in San Diego, and not just at the Honda dealerships.

a 2

Since this high-end private, gated community is only six miles or so from my house, I am very familiar with these balloons. People pay for rides in them. There are dozens of them, and they launch near the coast, which is only a few miles to the West. They ride the prevailing evening winds inland, and try to come down near major roads so the follow trucks can come and collect them. We see them, almost every night when the weather is good, sometimes in packs of a few dozen.

a 3

It turns out that this community, with its large, open areas, is often the place where they come down.

a 4

The next day, there were more of them. I think I did a post a year or so ago when one of these balloons landed in the backyard of a street just a few doors from my own house.

a 5

I think I would like to try the balloon ride one of these days, but there is a lot that can go wrong. You are at the mercy of the wind. The balloon that basically crash landed in my neighbor’s yard ended up hitting a short chain link fence, and spilling all the passengers out. There were no serious injuries.

Trump supporters seem annoyed by the idea of people from Mexico and South America wanting to come to the United States for a better life…

Which is funny, really, because that is how all of them ended up here. I mean, when you get right down to it, even the original Native Americans came here from somewhere else looking for a better life.

Happy birthday to Mr. Eric Idle, whom I had the honor and pleasure of meeting once…

I’m just sayin’…

That is not Photoshopped.
