Reflecting upon nature… part 23…

imageedit_1_6509165577

This is one of my favorites so far. It is really all about where you crop the bottom of the original image to match it with the reflecting water effect. I like that only one fin is showing. It makes it lopsided and quirky. And his mouth looks cool in the reflection.

A three bridge adventure… part 1…

a 1

Well, I am all caught up, but three days behind… by which I mean we finally finished all those pesky rose and sunset and San Francisco posts, and I can start telling you about my big driving adventure around the Bay Area… which actually happened the day before yesterday. This picture is the only one that I will post out of order. That is because my adventure involved me driving many miles and across three big bridges. The Golden Gate Bridge just happens to be the most photogenic of the three, and you have to have a good picture to start a post. Sorry, Oakland Bay Bridge and Richmond/San Rafael Bay Bridge. No insult intended.

a 1 a

Here is a handy little map to help you get some idea of where I went, in case you are not familiar with the Bay Area. I made a huge loop, although, technically, it was more tear drop-shaped. I left the yellow lines of the three bridges mostly uncovered. I started to make the red line of my travels squiggly where the roads were very twisty, but I realized that almost all the stuff above the Golden Gate would have ended up being like that.

a 2

I was really just trying to meet up with Big Johnny and his kid, William, who happens to be my godson, somewhere near San Francisco, where they live. But I had time to kill and a desire to see parts of the Bay Area that I haven’t seen in years. Here is the Richmond San Rafael Bridge. As you can see, it is not as eye-catching as the Golden Gate Bridge.

a 3

I know, I said I was going to do these in order, and I skipped way ahead, ten hours into the future, to show another picture of the Oakland Bay Bridge, from Treasure Island, where I ended up as I was almost back to my Mom’s house at the end of my adventure. Yes, Treasure Island is where I took all those other sunset photos, but the sun was setting again, so I pulled over. And now we have seen all three bridges, and we can move on.

a 4

Back onto the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge. Yes, I know, I was taking picture while driving, and you shouldn’t do that. But I was a paid, trained, professional driver for five years. And I don’t look through the view finder. I just point the camera and click the button. Then I crop the picture or delete it. There you can see San Francisco in the distance, way over to my left, because I was North of it.

a 5

And there is a lovely view of San Quentin, a maximum security federal prison. Looming behind it is Mount Tamalpais, on top of which I would end up later in the day, thanks to some road construction on Highway One, and one of the unscheduled detours I made.

a 6

Just twenty minutes later, I was driving through country that looked like this. Yes, just miles from San Francisco, you feel like you are nowhere near any big city at all.

a 7

I was surrounded by redwood trees.

a 9

You can park by the road, take a few steps, and be in the middle of the wilderness, metaphorically speaking.

a 11

How cool is that?

a 12

Not only are there adorable little towns, but there are farms and ranches right beside the road.

a 13

And if you are lucky, and good with animals, you can make some friends.

Okay, see you soon.

A rose garden, a sunset, and a city by a bay… the final chapter…

a 1

This is it! The last of the photos from the Berkeley Rose Garden and of the sunset from Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay.

a 2

Rare roses that might exist in only one or two other places in the world.

a 3

A rare city that definitely only exists in one place in the world.

a 4

The colors of roses.

a 5

The colors of the sky.

a 6

Man can alter nature.

a 7

And he can seek to protect himself from it.

a 8

He can change a rose so much that it almost doesn’t look like a rose anymore.

a 9

And he can cover over a place where once flowers grew.

a 10

I’m not sure where I am going with this exactly. I didn’t mean for it to get so heavy.

a 11

I’m visiting my mom. She doesn’t even have cable TV, so I am pretty insulated from things right now, but some news has leaked through into my isolation, and I guess it is working on my mood.

a 12

I sort of want to get back home, so I can start posting about real issues again… but I need this time away from it… for roses… and sunsets.

a 13

And a city by a bay.

A rose garden, a sunset, and a city by a bay… part 5…

a 1

Okay, I swear, we are almost done with these.

a 2

Just one more post to go… after this one…

a 3

Wait… those aren’t roses… I think that is a honeysuckle… why is that in the Berkeley Rose Garden?

a 4

Or it might be a poppy.

a 5

Sometimes photos in low light just don’t come out exactly how you want them to…

a 6

But then again, sometimes they come out looking cool in unexpected ways.

a 7

But I am getting pretty good at the daylight photos.

a 8

And some of the night ones turn out good enough.

a 9

That is almost the same shot as the one above. Ironically, this is what happens when you use the flash on something that is too far way for the light to reach.

a 10

You can almost smell the roses.

a 11

Boats and a bridge.

a 12

I like colors.

a 13

Colors make the world go around.

A rose garden, a sunset, and a city by a bay… part 4…

a 1

I should have used that photo for a caption contest post:

“Stella!”

But I can see how you might be confused about how raccoons fit into this series of posts. I was confused too.

a 2

The last thing I expected to see on Treasure Island, where I went to take some photos of the sunset and the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco, were a bunch of raccoons. It is an island, connected to San Francisco and Oakland only by a big bridge.

a 3

But there were so many raccoons that someone threw away a perfectly good one. Ha!

a 4

Okay, that might explain why there are so many… but still… she had to get there somehow.

a 5

I am just trying to finish up these pictures from two days ago so we can move on to the dozens of photos I took on my adventure yesterday.

a 6

I am falling behind.

a 7

It was a little weird taking these pictures while a bunch of raccoons were scrambling all around me.

a 8

They look cute, but they are wild animals, and can be quite vicious.

a 9

So anyway, enjoy the pictures.

a 10

I suppose it doesn’t matter if you follow along with the story or not.

a 11

But I like the stories.

a 12

I turned around from the view of the city to take a shot of the newly-rebuilt Eastern half of the Oakland Bay Bridge. That bridge, and two others, will play a big part in my adventure of yesterday… which were still tomorrow… when I took these… if you see what I mean.

A rose garden, a sunset, and a city by a bay… part 3…

a 1

What is this all about?

a 2

What do these things have in common?

a 3

Is that the Golden Gate Bridge way over there?

a 4

How do these things tie together?

a 5

How did you get photos of San Francisco from this angle?

a 6

Why are these roses exceptionally beautiful?

a 7

Why did they build a prison on a small island?

a 8

Where can I go to smell these roses?

a 9

Why are people sailing when it is almost dark?

a 10

Why are we asking all these questions?

a 11

When is this post going to be over?

a 12

And what the heck is that raccoon doing here?

Some of these questions can be answered by reading the earlier posts in this series. The raccoon one I will answer in the next post. I have no idea why people want to sail in the dark. And the Alcatraz one, you could Google that… I assume it seemed like a good place to keep prisoners, what with being surrounded by cold water full of dangerous currents and Great White Sharks.

I got kissed by a horse today…

a 1

Okay, it is a long story. I had an awesome adventure today.

a 2

These are just a few cell phone selfies I took at one stop on my Bay Area adventure.

a 3

I also got snuggled by a horse with one blue eye.

a 5

She was very nice too.

a 6

And these weren’t riding stable horses. This was a herd of semi-wild range ponies.

a 7

There were about thirty of them. I managed to get 4 or 5 to come over and say hi… because babies, dogs and horses love me.

a 8

But I am not going to tell you about today’s adventure until I finish with yesterday’s adventures, which won’t happen until tomorrow… so… uh…

a 9

But anyway, I met a really sweet new friend today. I saw mountains, forests, beaches, towns and cities, and a bunch of neat stuff. Because that is the irony of being a compulsive blogger. I could have stayed indoors and done posts from yesterday, but I had to go out and get some material for posts I won’t get too for a few days.

a 10

And it was so worth it.

A rose garden, a sunset, and a city by a bay… part 2…

a 1

Yeah, it was that kind of sunset, and I almost missed it.

a 2

If you don’t know why roses are popping up in here, you didn’t read the first post in the series.

a 3

There I was, last night, stuck in traffic heading towards the toll booths on the Oakland Bay Bridge…

a 4

Watching as the sun slid into the Pacific Ocean…

a 5

Watching my chances of taking good photos of this sunset slip away…

a 6

Fuming at the delay just as the cars around me were fuming into the atmosphere…

a 7

Take a deep breath. Smell the roses.

a 8

But I made it to Treasure Island in the middle of the bay, in time to get some pretty good shots.

a 9

And I have a lot more of them to share… after I get back from today’s adventure.
