Who knew porcupines were so freekin’ cute???

a 1

I mean, I watch the nature channels, and go to the zoo, and go out into the wild… and I still didn’t know.

a 2

They are quite good at climbing as well.

a 3

And their teeth, it turns out, are bright orange… from oxidization… which is basically rust.

a 4

But yeah, it turns out that porcupines are adorable.

a 5

Maybe it is because I never got so close to them before… or maybe it is the way they sit up like fat little dogs and hold food in their little hands while they cram it into their little faces.

a 6

All I know is that we had a great time getting to know them during Mollie’s surprise trip to the animals sanctuary. No, I’m not photobombing. I had to cut my wife… and most of me…  out of the picture, because she still doesn’t want to be in the blog.

a 7

The porcupines don’t mind being in the blog.

a 8

I think they know how cute they are.

a 9

Okay, one more post about the porcupines, and then we get to the animal that made Mollie cry with joy.

And we met a famous owl… with his own Instagram page…

a 1

This is Zeus, another of the animals we met when we took Mollie to an animal rescue center in Los Angeles for her special 18th birthday surprise.

a 2

There is my daughter, Mollie, on the right, and the nice girl who gave us our special tour, and introduced us to all the animals. As we were getting ready to leave, our guide said she had one more special animal we could meet… and owl named Zeus. Mollie lit up again as something clicked in her head. She started asking about stars in the owl’s eyes, and I got confused.

a 3

None of us knew that there was a famous owl that lived as this animal sanctuary, but Mollie actually follows Zeus on Instagram. Zeus is completely blind, and there is something about his eyes, a byproduct of the blindness. Zeus has stars in his eyes.

a 4

Don’t get too excited about these pictures, because I didn’t manage to capture this phenomenon with my camera. You have to Google Zeus, and look at some of the pictures on the internet… it is crazy.

a 5

If you take a good closeup in the right light, there is a constellation of stars in Zeus’s eyes.

a 6

He is a beautiful little owl, with splendid feathers, and we all got to pet him.

a 7

But you should really Google Zeus the owl.

The best thing about taking your kid to an exotic animal sanctuary…

a 1

You get to meet some cool animals too!

a 2

Yeah, we paid a lot for the special tour, and yes, we drove a long way through L A traffic.

a 3

But Mollie said it was the best day of her life… and remember, we aren’t even up to the animal that made her cry with joy.

a 4

I have never held an owl before.

a 5

And getting this close to such a beautiful bird is really quite moving.

a 6

Also, the money went to keep the shelter going, and they are taking really good care of rescued animals.

a 7

Seriously, people, don’t buy exotic pets. It never works out as well as you think it is going to.

a 8

But I got to pet a fennec fox!!!

You get to meet Mollie… while she is meeting cute animals… part 3…

a 1

Yes, now that Mollie, my younger daughter, is 18, my wife has given permission for her to appear on the blog in actual picture form.

a 2

And that is why you get to see these pictures of her, holding an owl.

a 3

Because that is one of the animals she got to meet for her birthday surprise.

a 4

Squirrel!!!

a 5

I may overdo the pictures of this owl.

a 6

But it was a very cute owl.

a 7

I have other pictures of another owl, a famous owl.

a 8

But we will get to that later…

a 9

After I post pictures of me holding this owl.

Is WordPress not letting us start new blogs now???

Seriously. I just want to start a second blog to highlight my books and written works in order to have a place to send literary agents and publishers, and I am having nothing but trouble. Any suggestions?

Caged eagles, an ironically timely metaphor…

a 1

Okay, I feel bad for using these majestic creatures as another slam at what tRump is doing to out country… but still…

a 2

But we did get to see them close up on the adventure we went on for my daughter’s birthday surprise.

a 3

And, until you are this close to them, you don’t really get a sense of how big they are… I almost said huge, but I don’t want to press my luck.

a 4

They are stunningly beautiful animals.

a 5

That giraffe is not a part of the animal rehabilitation sanctuary. Their neighbor trains exotic animals to  be used in movies… because Los Angeles, baby.

a 6

Awwww… sleepy kitty.

a 7

A lemur looking for a handout… with his hand out.

a 8

Nope, they belong to the neighbor… you know… for all the ostrich scenes you see in movies.

a 9

Awwwww… sleepy fox!
