We ended up back at this place…

a 1

You might recognize it. It was a big part of a movie called: Some Like It Hot, with Jack Lemmon, Marilyn Monroe, and Tony Curtis. My wife and I stayed here once for her birthday weekend. I did posts about it.

a 2

It is only about 20 miles from our house, so we went over there for brunch.

a 3

It is located on Coronado Island… yes, where the Navy SEALS train.

a 4

It is a lovely place.

a 5

There I am, flanked by Mollie, my younger daughter… yes, the one that just started college, not the one that recently got married… and her boyfriend, Dashawn. Oh, and once again, I had to crop my wife out of a photo, because she doesn’t want to be on the blog.

a 6

Did I mention that Dashawn is going into the Navy in a few months? Here he is, looking out at the ocean, and thinking about being way out there somewhere. I told him… as an ex Navy man… that the sea is like a sexy, crazy girlfriend. She will get into your blood, but you should never turn your back on her.

a 7

Anyway, have fun with the Super Bowl… Superbowl???… if you are into that ‘organized sports’ thing.

a 8

As we started up the Coronado bridge, you can just see the iconic red rooftops of the hotel in the distance.

a 9

Those mountains in the distance are in Mexico… South of Tijuana… and still no sign of a wall… HA!

a 10

And, ironically, just past the top of a ship raised up in dry dock for repairs, you can see the Navy ships at 32nd Street Naval Base, where I was stationed way back when I was 17.

I fixed that tiki that made me feel like a racist… even though we all know I’m not one… right???

a 1

Here is what it looks like now. You might remember the post I did with a photo of the way it used to look…

a a 1

Once again, let me remind you that when I first used that wood stain/varnish, it was a lovely redwood color. But it had thickened… and darkened in the can. That tiki just interacted with my Berkeley white liberal quilt complex.

a 2

I almost left the lips and nose dark, but even that made me uncomfortable. So I sanded them down a little.

a 3

I am still working on that tiki that looks like me. I have let it sit so long, the wood began to yellow… oh… crap… does that make me a racist again?

a 4

Also, my kitchen orchids are blooming again… and I just noticed that they are all white… sigh…

More digital fun with illustrations from my children’s books… part 7…

imageedit_3_8608365189

Yes, I love that I can make that from this image…

d 3

… with only one click, using a digital ‘kaleidoscope’ filter. But what I really love is that, if you look in the corners of the first image, there appears, briefly, a dark-purple heart and what looks, for a moment, like a light-purple, flying, headless chicken. HA!

More digital fun with illustrations from my children’s books… part 5…

The only thing cooler than digital filters are moving digital filters!

Not that it makes the original better…

More digital fun with illustrations from my children’s books… part 4…

a 1

Just a few more altered versions of a watercolor painting I did for my book: The Lonely Little Wizard…

a 2

Thereby combining the magic of digital filters…

a 3

With the magic of wizards…

a 4

And the magic of friendship…

a 5

With the magic of art…

a 6

And the magic of colors…

a 7

With the magic of my crack squirrel-filled cranium!!!

Cuteness sandwich…

There I am, playing with Olivia and… uh… one of the twin boys. No, they aren’t my kids.

More digital fun with illustrations from my children’s books… part 3…

a 1

In this post, I am using digital filters with slightly darker names… like: ‘night’ and ‘smoke’ and ‘grey’ and stuff like that there.

a 2

It is funny how easy it is to take a cheerful watercolor painting of two wizards holding hands in front of a lovely sunset, and make it look ominous with just one click.

a 3

But isn’t that the true soul of art? One can express so many emotions, capture so many moods.

a 4

And still, the viewer might see and feel something else entirely.

a 5

Maybe art is more in our minds than in our eyes.

a 6

And perhaps, just under the surface of every reality is a darker, more sinister reality.

a 7

Whoa… this post took a dark turn… that’s cast rather a pall of gloom over the evening, hasn’t it? Once again, to lighten the mood, the original image from my book: The Lonely Little Wizard…

d 3

On the other hand, is there a darker, sadder word than ‘lonely’?

The dancing moon…

a 1

I tried to take some pictures of that cool moon this morning… the thing is… (hey, thing, nice of you to show up)… that the dog kept me up all night, and I was too lazy to get the tripod out…

a 2

I tried bracing the camera on top of the fence, and against the corner of the house…

a 3

But, because it was dark, and a flash would ruin the photo, and the shutter was staying open for like 8 seconds to compensate…

a 4

I didn’t really get any clear pictures.

a 5

Still, I thought I would share them.

a 6

Because they do look sort of cool.

a 7

That last one I took with my cell phone. To me, it looks like a picture of a planet taken through a really large telescope… of a star in a far off galaxy.

a 1

Still having fun with that illustration from my children’s book: The Lonely Little Wizard… mmmm… neon…

a 2

That is sort of cool…

a 3

Not too shabby…

a 4

Almost sinister…

a 5

Nice. Now, once again, the original image that I did in pen and watercolors…
