She sells seashells wherever…

a 1

Okay, this macro photography thing is really confusing me. Like many kinds of art, there are multiple ways to achiever roughly the same effect. All this time playing with the three macro zoom lens my son-in-law loaned me, and he just got around to suggesting that I try using them with my big zoom lens.

a 2

I took these photos with the regular lens with the macro lens spacers. I was playing around trying to figure out which size was best. I called him to ask how to keep the shadow of the lens off the object I was photographing. He said the big zoom would let me move further back.

a 3

So now I guess I have to start the playing around all over again.

a 4

And I started doing that… but I have a few other posts to do first.

a 5

But I do love the super close up macro photography. How else would I have known that this small rock, from the collection of small rocks I have picked up in my world travels, had a small mouth on it? It looks a little like a mummified alien head.

Stick together… part 11…

b 7 copy

Yes, I am still having fun doing the mirror image thing… and yes, I still find it amusing to do them to photos of people doing yoga for now… but I have found that pair yoga, which I didn’t know was a thing, is the funniest yet.

b 7

Hey, don’t judge me… you think it is easy living with crack squirrels in your head?

Is it just me, or does the sun look weird in this picture?

a 4

I mean, I did take the photos with my phone, so it isn’t like my good camera, but still… it looks like an alien planet.

a 5

But, see, it happened in more than one photo.

a 6

And it looked pretty normal just a few minutes earlier.

a 7

So… uh… yeah.

Does anybody else see the hipster elf guy in that flagstone???

imageedit_2_6503246583

Because I was at work the other day, and I was taking a break, and I glanced down, and there he was…

a 1

Just looking back up at me from between my size-fifteen feet…

I must admit, my added lines did not really capture his mischievous grin or his tempestuous eyes, but you get the idea. It is the receding hairline on the swept-back forehead that really makes that braid work.

Glass… part 7…

a 1

Why is this series called: glass? Not just because I used glass camera lenses to take the photos…

a 2

But these are photos of glass… taken with a macro lens for super close up images…

a 3

Then I added a little digital filter magic…

a 4

But this time, I once again started with a kaleidoscope filter on the original photo before I did the other magic.

a 5

And I must say, I like the way these turned out.

a 6

Ooooh… stars within stars!

a 7

And that, my friends, is what happens when you take an image and use the regular kaleidoscope filter on it, and then put that image through the ‘kaleidoscoper’ filter. Oh yeah!

a 10

That up there is the original photo. It is a close up of this…

z 18

That ‘fire bowl’ I made in my glass blowing class… taken on a glass table… with a glass lens… so, uh, yeah… glass!

Stick together… part 10…

a 1 copy 2

Well, that looks like the aftermath of a horrible accident, but don’t worry…

a 1 copy

I just found myself wondering what would happen if I did that mirror image thing with two people doing yoga… if t indeed that is what they are doing…

Stick together… part 9…

a 1

If you don’t know what these are, then I guess you didn’t read the words in the first seven posts…

a 2

And I covered all that in another post that has nothing to do with these posts…

a 3

But never mind…

a 4

The important thing is that I am having fun, and doing the bidding of the crack squirrels that live inside my head, so they don’t get frustrated and start chewing on the wiring again. Also, that one would be the worst Siamese Twins connection ever.

a 5

Or maybe not…

a 6

I guess things can always be worse.

Stick together… part 8…

a 1

So, uh, yeah…

a 2

Still doing those funny pictures where I use Photoshop to take images and then copy part of them and flip them over and then stick the two halves back together…

a 3

I mean, there are a lot of ways to do it, depending on what part of the image you copy.

a 4

Why am I doing this? Because the crack squirrels in my head told me to.

a 5

And now, I spend all day with ideas for things to do this ‘sticking together’ thing to… while I am at work, or in the shower, or trying to sleep… bouncing around in my cranium.

a 6

And I don’t know where the idea of doing it to images of people doing yoga came from… me or the squirrels…

a 7

But there are more of them coming… stupid crack squirrels…

Stand out… the final chapter… and some thoughts about blogging on WordPress…

a 1 a

I tried to start a conversation about what it takes to stand out in a crowded world, and what makes each of us unique. The conversation never really got rolling. I blame that not on you, my friends, but on our semi-benevolent overlords at WordPress. I don’t know if you know this or not, but WordPress is dying.

Okay, that might not be fair. Maybe it is now so big that nobody can keep up, or actually read any posts. All I know is that the stats are falling every year. Am I less interesting? I doubt it. I do know that a lot of very interesting people have left. Because what do we get for the work we do here? Yes, I am a stat monkey. Yes, I like the numbers. But I like real conversation a lot more.

I have that post over there at the very top of my sidebar. It has 44,662 comments on it. It is the most commented-upon single blog post in history done by a nonfamous individual. We invented the chat room blog post. We used to have parties in there on weekends. We were going to turn it into a book. Now, all the people who used to hang out in there are gone. I can barely get new people to leave a single comment there. I used to not be able to keep up with replying to them all.

What is happening here? Are we on a sinking ship, the last rats waiting to flee to the lifeboats until it is too late? Are we just scrolling through endless walls of blog posts and hitting the like button? Does anybody actually come here and see my blog front page? I would love your thoughts on this.

As for the original idea behind this series of posts, I will just say this.

I am lucky in that I was born interesting. Not in all good ways, mind you. But I am all-art-side-or-the-brain, and have crack squirrels living in my head. And I go out of my way to be interesting, and have an interesting life. I have stories to tell. I work hard to be unique. I go out and find experiences. I take glass blowing classes and learned to blacksmith. I travel. I do weird things. I put effort into being myself.

I hoped to have a conversation about this, but maybe conversation isn’t what blogs are for anymore. Am I wrong? Am I right? Are you reading these words?

Still more dogs and logs on blogs… now with more dogs!

b 1

We have three dogs at our house now. Two of them live there, one is just visiting.

b 2

And, in my continuing effort to make tikis that are completely nontraditional, I am making one with facial features that have all straight lines. I don’t know if this will end up being cool or not, but I will keep you updated as the work progresses.
