A three bridge adventure… part 6… (and yes, that really is a Civil War-era fort tucked under the bridge)…

a 1

I know, it seems crazy that they built a fort underneath the Golden Gate Bridge. That’s because that is crazy. They built the fort, Fort Point, way back during the American Civil War, during the 1860’s, to protect the mouth of the bay. They built the bridge much later, and left the fort there for historical preservation reasons.

a 2

I still hadn’t reached the Golden Gate Bridge, the second bridge in my driving adventure around the Bay Area. I turned off and drove up the cliffs on the Northern headlands, to get you these pictures.

a 3

Speaking of forts, the headlands on both sides of the Golden Gate are covered with gun emplacements left over from the wars that followed our Civil War.

a 4

I was driving in another big loop, to get these shots, and to end up back at the bridge.

a 5

Lower down on the point, not far from the lighthouse that shines near the entrance to the bay, you now have a view similar to that of a ship’s captain, heading into the bay.

a 6

And then I was on the bridge!

a 7

Yes, I know, I was taking pictures while driving. Don’t try this. Unless you were a professional driver. Also, once again, I hold the camera in one hand, without looking through the view finder, and just click off some shots, hoping for the best.

a 8

I stopped off on the headlands on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge.

a 9

I didn’t have a great view of the bridge itself.

a 10

I had a great time with our friends, Big Johnny and Eva, and their son, William, who happens to be our godson. And then I was back on the road, heading for the third bridge of the day, the Oakland Bay Bridge. And yes, as the sign says, I would be passing through the Treasure Island tunnel once more.

a 11

Join me later for the end of this adventure.

A three bridge adventure… part 5… (oh look, it’s another bridge)…

a 1

I suppose this is almost the halfway point of my three bridge adventure… or at least it will be once I drive halfway over that bridge right there. But I sent myself on another little detour first, getting off the highway, and turning right, or West, and driving up the bluffs of the headlands overlooking the Golden Gate. You don’t often get to see the bridge from the Northwest.

a 2

I did a lot of driving on very twisty, narrow roads on this adventure.

a 3

But I do this for you as much as I do it for myself.

a 4

I haven’t driven this far up this road in years.

a 5

It was spectacular.

a 6

A behind the scenes view of San Francisco.

a 7

Alcatraz Island and Treasure Island, once again.

a 8

The headlands on the South side of the mouth of the bay.

a 9

And the headlands on the North side, where I was.

a 10

I kind of like that picture.

a 11

You can see the lighthouse that keeps ships safe. There is also a foghorn. And I think that ship is the same one we saw off the coast in the last post. The Pacific looks calm, but this is an area known for storms, tides, and fog… also, Great White Sharks.

a 12

Okay, join me later when I cross the second bridge in my three bridge adventure!

Reflecting upon nature… part 26…

This one reminds me of a joke:

Why do sharks swim around people a few times with their fins showing above the water before they attack?

Because people taste better without the poop inside them.

A three bridge adventure… part 4… (in which I make an unexpected detour)…

a 1

Back to the adventure. I was on the return leg of my circuitous driving adventure around the Bay Area. I had been up the coast North of San Francisco, and was heading back to the city. Highway One was closed due to a rock slide, and I got diverted up into the hills.

a 2

Don’t worry, I didn’t take any of these photos while I was driving. That road was twisty. I stopped and got out of the car for all these.

a 3

The higher I got, the better the views were.

a 4

I ended up, once again, among groves of coastal redwoods.

a 5

They might be my favorite tree, if I was forced to have one of those.

a 6

The Pacific Ocean spread out before me. You can see a ship in the haze.

a 7

This is why I love my adventures. I never end up where I expect to.

a 8

I ended up on the top of Mount Tamalpais. That is the one that shows up in so many of the sunset pictures I take from my mom’s house on the East side of the bay and from the hills above her house. It is the one that looks like a sleeping lady. I now had a great view of the bay, spread out below me.

a 9

That island is Treasure Island. Yes, the one where I went on this trip to the Bay Area and took those awesome sunset photos, and the pictures of San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the raccoons. You can see the two ends of the Oakland Bay Bridge, the new end, and the old end. It passes through a tunnel cut into the Island. This island is where the Myth Busters TV show was filmed. The new… or East… end of the bridge you might remember from the news, because an upper portion of it collapsed onto the lower deck during an earthquake not too many years ago. It is also the last bridge I would pass over on this adventure.

a 10

It was a lovely day, and there were a lot of sail boats.

a 11

I had some awesome views of San Francisco, from the North, for a change.

a 12

Alcatraz Island is in the foreground, to the left.

a 13

I would be in San Francisco in just a few hours, to meet Big Johnny and my godson.

a 14

Alcatraz.

Okay, join me later for the next part of the adventure. We still have two more bridges to get over.

Another Halloween-themed one, perhaps?

A three bridge adventure… part 3… (on birds, water,and water birds)…

a 1 a

That, I believe, is a turkey vulture. I am back in San Diego now. I left my mom’s house in the Bay Area very early this morning. But I am not done sharing the pictures of my little driving adventure I went on a few days ago.

a 1

When I left off at the end of the last post in this series, I had met those awesome horses, and then retraced my route alongside Tomalis Bay. I was now paralleling the Pacific Ocean, just a little inland from the coast. I was driving through oak-covered hills.

a 2

I ended up by a large salt water estuary… or tidal flat… or whatever it was. I pulled over a few times, because it was chock full of birds.

a 3

It was also rather lovely.

a 4

There were dozens of pelicans flying and floating around.

a 5

Notice the one pelican in that shot getting ready to land.

a 6

I spotted this bird up the beach. He had a very long bill, and I think that is a crab he is holding. I love that crazy zoom lens.

a 7

A pelican diving for a snack.

a 8

Pelicans flying in formation. Those aren’t the regular brown pelicans. I should really get out my bird book and figure out what kind those are.

a 9

But if you like pelicans, head to this large marsh just North of Stinson Beach, not too far from the Golden Gate Bridge.

a 11

Now we get to the part of my adventure where something unexpected happens… which is why I call them adventures. As I passed Stinson Beach, I intended to stay on the coast all the way to the Golden Gate, taking pictures of the rugged coastline and the sea. But Highway One was closed for some repairs from a rock slide. I got detoured up into the mountains. I think that is Stinson Beach down below me.

a 12

And when I got out of the car to take some pictures of the sea below, I spotted this plant beside the road.

a 13

I took pictures of it because those leaves were huge. Six feet long, at the very least. I guess the picture doesn’t really show it very well, but that plant seemed like it belonged on a tropical island, not the hills of the Bay Area.

a 14

And this is where I leave off on my adventure for now, with me climbing the hills, not too far North of San Francisco, with the Pacific spreading out below me.

See you soon.

I suppose this is sort of a reflection upon Halloween as well…

A three bridge adventure… part 2… (in which I get kissed by a horse!)…

a 1 a

I know, I already posted that picture. But I love that picture. And that horse. We are one bridge into my three bridge adventure in the Bay Area the day before yesterday. After leaving my mom’s house just North of Berkeley in the East Bay… (see handy map in the first post of this series)… I crossed over the Richmond/San Rafael bridge and continued Northwest towards the coast. I passed through redwood forests and hill country. I met a few other horses. Then I drove along Tomales Bay. This is pronounced Tu-moll-iss, not like the Mexican food.

a 1

I have a few photos of that part of my drive, but I took them on the way back from this stop, which is the furthest Northwest I got.

a 2

I knew I had to get back to San Francisco to meet Big Johnny and William. And I was still heading away from there. When I saw this herd of horses mixed in with a herd of cattle, I knew I had to stop.

a 3

Now once again, I feel the need to point out that these aren’t some riding stable horses. They didn’t have any of the marks on their backs associated with being ridden often… or ever. These were semi-wild range ponies.

a 4

These aren’t the kinds of horses that just walk over and say hi to anybody.

a 5

These horses have to sense that you are okay. And I didn’t have any carrots or sugar cubes with me, just so you know.

a 6

I managed to get 4 or 5 to come say hello.

a 7

Because horses, dogs and babies love me.

a 8

I am just that awesome.

a 9

Yup.

a 10

And when I left, my new friend… the one who gave me a kiss… didn’t want me to go.

a 11

Anyway, I headed back the way I had just come… past a river that fed Tomales Bay… or maybe  it was just a narrow branch of the bay…

a 12

… to where it fed into the bigger bay. It is amazing that all this is so near San Francisco.

a 13

Tomales Bay is famous for its oyster farms. All along the side of the bay there are shacks and counters selling oysters. Barbecued oysters are a specialty.  And this is a beautiful drive. I suggest you try it if you ever have time and are in the Bay Area. In fact, I recommend driving the entire coast of California on Highway One if you can. And throw in Oregon and Washington State if you have time.

a 14

The bay narrows into salt marsh as you get to the end of it… the closed end…

a 15

I had another twenty or so beautiful miles to drive, before we can get to some new stuff.

a 16

But meeting this girl was definitely a highlight of my day.
