I swear, these are the last random pictures of the fancy hotel we stayed at last weekend before I start doing posts about why we stayed at that fancy hotel last weekend…

a 1

Yes… I know… that isn’t a picture of a fancy hotel…

a 2

But I took these right out in front of the hotel. The hotel hires this nice lady… a licensed hawk trainer… to hang around the hotel with her Harris hawk… to keep the seagulls from grabbing food right off the plates of the people eating outside.

a 3

She actually lets the hawk fly around. Sometimes it lands on the railings of the balconies of the hotel, and if you aren’t expecting it… and really, why would you be… it can be a little startling.

a 4

Anyway, I do love me some birds of prey, so I ran down and talked to the lady and got some pictures to share with you.

a 5

I also met this adorable little guy… while I was out wandering around waiting for my wife to get ready for… that thing… that I’m going to tell you about soon…

a 6

His name is Watson.

a 7

He is awfully cute.

a 8

The hotel also had a life-sized calf outside the ice cream parlor. I want one of those. I don’t know what I would do with it, but I bet me and the crack squirrels living in my head could come up with a few ideas.

a 9

Oh, look… there is one of the seagulls that snuck back in when the hawk lady left. California gulls are crazy. They will swoop down and grab food right out of your hand. If you come to California, you should bring a hawk. You should also tell me, so I can meet you someplace.

a 10

Some guy built this really cool sandcastle. It was as tall as I am, and I am pretty tall.

a 11

Seriously, if you ever come to San Diego, let me know. We can meet at the Hotel Del Coronado for lunch.

a 12

Well… uh… that was just sitting in the hotel hallway near our room… so I took a picture of it.

a 13

I can’t remember if I posted any photos of the central courtyard of the hotel or not…

a 14

Either way, no sense letting these go to waste, right?

a 15

I took that picture while my wife and I were waiting for a cab… to go to that thing… which I will tell you about in the very next post… you know… unless the crack squirrels come up with some crazy idea to mess with Donald Trump of whatever…

If you miss this post, you are missing the point…

a 1

Okay, that was a bad joke… but little miss Olivia does like to point…

a 2

If you think about it, pointing is a great way for little kids to learn how to communicate before they can speak. Obviously, it can be used to direct your attention…

a 3

But there is more going on than just that. Yes, on the face of it, she is telling me that there is something interesting to look at.

a 4

But she is also telling me that she wants me to tell her about whatever it is she is pointing at. She wants to learn about the world around her.

a 5

When a kid sees an airplane, they have no idea what it is. Talk to them. Tell them all about airplanes. You might think they have no idea what you are talking about, but the words and sounds go into their little heads and bounce around. They come back out as funny sounds while they attempt to master language. I constantly talked to my daughters when they were little… between the funny sounds and goofy noises. That’s why they are so smart today.

a 6

And pay attention to the facial expressions and body language. Pointing can mean so many things. It might be something they like, or it might be something they have never seen before or something they don’t like that they are concerned about. Oh, and play the pointing game all the time. Look for stuff you know they like, and ask them where it is. When they point at it, make a big fuss about it. This, in a nutshell, is how language starts.

a 7

So, yeah, my babysitting gig with my little buddy is over for now.

a 8

I might be doing it again in a few weeks… I sure hope so.

a 9

Because I am crazy about that little munchkin.

a 11

She is so sweet and smart and warm and cuddly.

a 12

And there is noting like quality time with a little kid.

a 13

I know… I’ve said it many times… but if babies, dogs and horses don’t trust someone, then neither should you.

a 14

But when they look at you like that… well…

a 16

On the other hand, sometimes she looks at me like that. That is Olivia saying to me: ‘Dude, put the camera down, and stop taking pictures for your stupid blog, because we got stuff to do.’

a 17

All I can say is, that when she points directly at me, and smiles that little smile that says: ‘I like you’… my heart just melts.

Well, I was supposed to babysit again today…

a 3

But our friend, Joey, who is Olivia’s dad, and a friend of my wife’s from grade school days, decided to… uh… ‘take a sick day’…

a 1

Yeah, I’m sorry if you live where it is snowing outside…

a 2

I mean, I’m really sorry…

a 4

Because it was like 85 degrees at the beach in San Diego today… Hey, don’t I look sorry?

a 5

I always like doing stuff with Joey and Olivia… a lot of people assume we are a gay couple… that cracks me up…

a 6

Okay, so it wasn’t exactly babysitting… but it wasn’t a bad way to spend the day.

The real Cruz and Trump…

A romantic sunrise walk with my wife…

a 1

I love that picture…

a 3My My wife and I walked down the beach as the sky began to lighten.

a 4

The world was coming alive around us.

a 5

That big cruise ship was still making its way into the port of San Diego.

a 6

I actually took a few pictures of the waves crashing on the rocks…

a 7

You know… trying to get that one perfect shot…

a 8

I guess, after the picture I started the post with, the one I like the most, I didn’t really need to share all the rest…

a 9

But I hate to waste a perfectly good photograph.

a 10

Now, usually, when you are right on a beach on the Pacific Ocean, you have to walk quite a ways in order to see the sun rise over water… but we were on Coronado Island… which is, technically, an isthmus…

a 11

So we just had to walk back past the Hotel Del Coronado…

a 12

And across the strand to get to the harbor in San Diego bay…

a 13

There really is nothing quite like the reflection of boats on still water when the light is just right…

a 14

I love boats… have I mentioned that?

a 15

And there it is… the money shot… the sun peaking up over the mountains in Tijuana, Mexico.

a 16

And there is the famous Coronado bridge.

a 17

There was a cool statue of a guy doing a handstand on the roof of a building…

a 18

I do love me some whimsical art.

a 19

And then my wife and I went back over to the beach… on our way to the awesome breakfast buffet at the Hotel Del…

a 20

And we sat on a rock and watched the sunlight dance on the waves…

Uh…

According to WordPress and their always mystifying stats page, yesterday I had 118 views… but only three visitors… so… somebody was really busy looking at a lot of old posts, I guess???

Well of course I got up early to take pictures of sunrises for you too… don’t I always, when I go somewhere interesting?

img

Okay, technically, that picture is jumping ahead a little … It was taken when my wife and I went on a romantic early morning walk on Saturday morning to watch the sun come up, and the rest of the pictures in this post actually happened before that, when I got up super early, and didn’t want to wake her up yet…

a 2

I mean, she wanted me to wake her up at a certain time to see the sunrise, and I tend to wake up really early…

a 3

So I went down and took these pre-dawn-warm-up pictures…

a 4

You know, before I went back and woke her up…

a 5

There is a stillness at that time of the day that you can’t find at any other time.

a 6

You feel like you are watching the world come awake…

a 7

When I went back to the room to wake her up, I spotted this cruise ship from the balcony, coming into the port of San Diego…

a 8

I was wondering how many people on the ship had bothered to get up early to watch the sunrise.

a 9

And I was still wondering that when we went down to the beach to start our romantic walk… which I will tell you about in a few minutes…

And now, a bunch of random photos of the view from the balcony of that fancy hotel my wife and I stayed at… including some really awesome sunsets… even though I’m still not ready to tell you why we stayed there…

Spending the day with me… from a kid’s point of view… the final chapter…

a 19

Hey, as long as I am already balancing on your knees… do that thing where you open them apart, and then grab me right as I start to slide through the gap… I love that thing…

a 20

Yeah… I’m totally ready… do it…

a 21

You know, it would be a lot easier for you to read to me…

a 22

If you didn’t always have the camera in your other hand… just sayin’…

a 24

Okay… seriously… dude… you wore me out…

a 25

I think it’s nap time…

a 26

No… I have no idea why I can only fall asleep when I cross my legs and stick them up in the air, cover my face with a blanket, and clap my hands… don’t judge me…

a 27

You’re just the babysitter…
