Uh… is this some kind of a sick joke, San Diego zoo???… but nice flowers!!!

So the San Diego zoo has a new exhibit where they show life-sized recreations of extinct animals that used to live in the area… including that big mastodon elephant in an earlier post, and a giant sloth, a sabre tooth tiger… and this… whatever kind of prehistoric predator that is… that was placed right beside an enclosure of live antelope… or some kind of prey-type-African deer-sort-of-animals… This seems to be sort of cruel. Those guys just spend their whole lives wondering when that thing is going to leap at them and tear them apart.

I did love the fake tar pit full of bones, though… and the flowers…

I will get more pictures of the flowers when I go back to get some pictures of the new baby giraffe… and the baby gorilla… which we didn’t see on this visit…

These ones were interesting… each flower had a little cross in the middle… never seen that before.

All I know it that the rattlesnakes were extra frisky that day…

It was hard to tell where one snake ended and another began…

Hey, remember when that rattlesnake came right in our front door and I had to catch it in a Tupperware?

More animal photos… (or): Sorry, new people!!!

Okay, that isn’t a real photo of me getting charged by a bull elephant… it is me Photoshopped in front of a fake elephant at the zoo… but it does dramatize the point I am about to make…

I always feel bad when new people follow me during one of those rare times when my blog is doing something ‘normal’… like posting pictures of animals… especially when the new followers have blogs with the word ‘photography’ in their title…

Because someday… and it will be a day very soon… these poor souls will open my blog and see a picture of Trump Photoshopped into some crazy situation… or something really weird…

And if you pop in expecting a photo of an orangutan eating honey out of a hole in a fake rock with a long stick…

It might come as something of a shock…

I mean, I just want you to know…

… that if you come here expecting to see endless nature pictures…

Yes, I like photos of a rhino getting his chin scratched as much as anybody…

But this blog is really more like a zoo… and it is full of wild and weird things…

I made friends with a giraffe yesterday, what did you do?

We went to the ‘world famous San Diego zoo yesterday… (you have to say it as: ‘the world famous San Diego zoo’, or they kick you out of San Diego…

That is my daughter Mollie’s arm… the highlight of her day was getting giraffe slobber all over her…

The ‘world famous San Diego zoo’ does sort of deserve the tile… (unlike San Diego’s self-adopted title as: ‘America’s finest city’, which I doubt the rest of the country was asked to vote on)… They pioneered large enclosures with trees and plants and room for the animals to move around in. They also, along with the San Diego Wild Animal Park, do captive breeding programs that are actually saving animals from extinction… which also led to some pretty strange Panda porn sites on the internet… oh, look, they are warming up those long, purple tongues…

The point is that the days of the zoo where magnificent animals pace back and forth on bare cement floors in a little cage are coming to an end.

They don’t let everybody feed the giraffes… we just showed up at the right time to be included in the short line.

And the giraffes are sort of picky…

They check you out pretty thoroughly…

They have to decide they like you before they lower their heads… it is a lot of work for them, after all…

Obviously they liked me… babies, dogs, horses and all wild creatures love me…

Seriously… those tongues are freakishly long…

There were some very young giraffes there, and we found out that another was going to be born today or tomorrow… I may have to go back for more pictures…

In fact, I think, because we have zoo memberships, and can go back whenever we want to, that I will bring the zoom lens, and get you all some more pictures in the coming weeks… but first we have to get through the dozens of pictures I took yesterday.
