How American politics work…

If we didn’t have two parties, we would all settle on the best men in the country and things would run fine. But as it is, we settle on the worst ones and then fight over them…

The short memories of American voters is what keeps our politicians in office…

These two quotes are from Will Rogers, a very funny American whom most of you probably don’t even remember. Unfortunately, these quotes are too true to be funny.

For many of my friends voting is akin to sports fandom in that they follow their “team” not matter who the players are. I, all too often, find myself voting for the lesser of the evils and having worked too closely with too many politicians for too long I often know too much to make voting for any of them very appealing to me.

I don’t think the party system means anything anymore. It sure doesn’t in Canada. It is a matter of who has the biggest bank roll behind them and from then on it becomes payback time for the lobbyists and the multinationals. Democracy be damned!

  3. Not entirely true because Hillary is not a man, so unless some miracle happens in the primaries, we’ll be fighting over her.

Will Rogers died in 1935, so I don’t remember him (given that he died 42 years before I appeared on the scene). Still, I do know he was wise and funny. And I have rubbed his foot in Statuary Hall in the US Capitol Building.

I think a HUGE part of the problem is that two states — neither very representative of the US population at large — New Hampshire and Iowa — have way too much say in who goes on to lead the two parties.

Will Rogers? Half of Americans barely remember George W. Bush.
