Eating in San Francisco…

We got together with Willie… and his parents… for a nice meal…

We went out for Ethiopian food…

I loves me some family style eating.

I was assured that it was indeed Ethiopian food… even though the sign says Eritrean food. I have no idea if that is a part of Ethiopia, or if Ethiopia is now called Eritrea… or maybe the Eritreans are an ethnic group in Ethiopia… and yes, I could Google it… but I am an American, and you all know we can barely find America of a map.

But the food was good… spicy and good. Eva, Willie’s mom, on top of being involved in cleaning up beaches and feeding the homeless and ridding the world of plastic straws, is also a vegan. So Willie loves his fruits and vegetables. He eats better than any kid I ever met.

Oh… and it was also Eva’s birthday. YAY! And the day after these pictures were taken, Willie turned 2-years-old. So stay tuned for pictures of that.

With your big hands you could probably just clean that plate in 1 swipe!

OMFSM, I *love* me some Ethiopian food. The first time I had it was in a little hole-in-the-world restaurant in Portland. Dee-licious! I was so pleased when I learned there was an Ethiopian restaurant about 15 minutes from where I live.

    *sigh*

As soon as I can, I’m going back there.

  3. I love Ethiopian and I’m lucky to have options down here in the South. They even sell the bread in one of the ethnic grocery stores.

I have to be honest and say that doesn’t look appetising to me, I think it’s because it is too many dishes on one plate, like people do at buffets (and I have a phobia about food mixing) I think if they had gone for an approach like a meze and put smaller dishes across the table like a banquet it would be more appealing. Anyway, listen to me, who do I think I am – Gordon Ramsey!

Do you not think his show where he saves restaurants is a bit fixed? They argue, he shouts at them, he finds rancid food, he gives them a new meatball recipe (always meatballs, something he would never serve in his restaurants so this tells me he doesn’t even create the recipes, he just presents the show) Their opening night goes well until one hiccup threatens to derail it but then they pull it out the bag and it’s a success!

He has a range of gastropubs here, I was in one on the Thames Saturday, they wouldn’t serve pints, only 2/3rds of a pint. What’s that about Gordon?

We have a whack of Eriteans here in Ottawa. They are cool people – very warm and welcoming and peaceful. Eritrea is an experiment in Africa. It broke away from the warlords of Ethiopia in 1991 (although it has had a separate history for thousands of years) and established a country of 6 million souls. It has a large mixture of ethnic groups and exists with very little government. The diaspora is widely flung and sends money back home. They do struggle but take great pride in their freedom. Very happy folks. I’ve never seen Eritrean food – is it a lot of vegetables? I’d love to try it.

Willie looks like he is having the time of his life – lots of attention. He has a very impish grin 😀

Ummm…that looks amazing. Eva and I have something in common, I’m also a vegan. Unfortunately you’ll never find Ethiopian, let alone Eritrean food, in our small town I’m afraid. Plenty of Santa Maria Style barbecue though.
