Willie goes on safari… part 3…

We saw a lion…

Unfortunately, he was resting on top of our car…

But then the boss came and kicked him off his perch…

And he had to take a nap on the cold, hard ground.

So much for that whole ‘king of the beasts’ thing.

Then we made Willie do a lot more walking, but that kid is a trooper.

One cool thing about the San Diego Safari Park is that not all the animals are in cages. The park gets a lot of visitors from outside, because of all the lakes and ponds. These ducks were just napping right under the table when we stopped to get some food.

And that guy was perched on the top of the umbrella at the same table.

I don’t think that is a local bird, but he can obviously fly.

Willie loved the big stone ball that spun around in its slippery base. It had the map of the world carved on it like a big, wet, black globe.

And there is Big Johnny, Willie’s dad. I love the look on his face. Compare the two pictures. In the first one, he looks slightly worried. He is thinking of all the ways his kid might get hurt… pinched fingers or whatever… but in the second photo, having decided it was safe enough, he is just experiencing the pure joy of watching his child explore his world. That is why I miss having little kids around all the time. They let you see the magic in the everyday things around you.

I think in the first one, Big Johnny is just trying to remember the names of all the different countries (since they change so often) just in case Willie asks him to name them!

  2. Kids are awesome for bringing magic into our lives. Not having any of my own, I use have weekends were I would round up all my friend’s and sister’s kids and “borrow” them for the weekend. It was amazing how many people would show up on my doorstep and drop their kids off, barely before I hung up the phone. I’d have at least a dozen kids at a time and they were some of my best weekends.

First photo confused me, looked like he was on a trampoline.
