Driving for miles and miles through California’s central valley, especially if you have made that journey hundreds of times, can get a little old. And I always tend to be a little depressed when I leave the Bay Area anyway. I was tired and not looking forward to the drive through L. A. Then Mother Nature gave us this to look at…
Mollie took these pictures while I drove. Up to this point, all we had had for scenery was seemingly endless expanses of nothing.
It is the kind of view that can get under your skin. It is always either too hot or too cold in the valley. And there are crazy drivers to keep your nerves on edge. You know the type. Those people who try to rush a few cars ahead every time there is a semi truck slowing down the right lane. They zip past you and one or two other cars and then try to jump back into the line. And there are a lot of bugs in the valley. Different kinds of bugs for different times of the year. You sometimes drive through clouds of big bugs… for miles and miles. By the end of the ride your car looks like it had been painted with bug guts. The windshield wipers just smear the goo back and forth.
That is when a nice sunset or a rainbow can really make your whole day a lot better. I haven’t even mentioned the fog… the valley is famous for this thick ground fog called Tule fog…(pronounced Toolee). Even by San Francisco standards… and we know about fog… this is some thick, scary stuff to drive in.
But I gotta tell ya, a sunset like this can make up for a lot of other stuff.
And the day after we got back, San Diego welcomed us with this sunset…
