No… there really was… see the post below this one if you don’t believe me…
And there were these old coastal gun emplacements…
You know… because California gets invaded by sea all the time…
One of the emplacements actually still had a pice of coastal artillery inside it…
I don’t know how old these fortifications are. I would guess from sometime around World War One. Definitely not Civil War era like Fort Point, which still nestles under the North end of the Golden Gate bridge. John says they fire this gun on some special occasions. With blank shells of course…
So I guess he had seen this enough to not be that interested. But Jason and Mollie thought it was sort of cool…
My shadow in the foreground makes it look like I am scratching my head as I contemplate the ammunition bunker. But did I mention that Mollie thought that a giant cannon was really cool? She is my kid, that’s for sure…
These guns rise up to fire, and then sink back down as the crews load them, just so you know. They don’t just shoot into the cement emplacement. Because that would be silly. And dangerous. But I wouldn’t want to be the Captain of a ship that had to steam past a bunch of these guns, I can tell you that…

I was looking at this & thinking maybe these guns were put here to protect the west coast after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. There were lots of naval ships on the west coast in WWII, so maybe they were intended to protect the fleet?
They may be earlyer than that. I guess I could look it up, but I like a mystery.
Not to rain on your parade here, but if I gave you the impression that they actually fired that gun, it was in error. They uncover it and put it through its moves, but no big bangs happen. Still, pretty cool though.
I am sorry to hear that, but it might be for the best. You don’t want to scare the captains of those big oil tankers going through the narrows… particularly the drunk ones.
I have a friend moved to San Francisco for work for 6 months, every photo she posted in December was of the brightest clearest blue skies. Envious
When the weather is good, no place in the world beats it.
I’ll make it there one day. I plan on applying for my Visa this year so if granted I finally get access to the USA, should last 10 years too.
You better e-mail me if you are coming over.
I’ll be in the British Pub
That would sort of defeat the purpose.
What purpose is that? I am always in a pub 🙂
We have bars here… and pubs… we will fiigure something out.
you say potato
I do say potato. Ialso say French fries. Not chips. Ha!
You mean skinny chips
If you say so…
This beach makes me want to…
Oh, beaches are sly like that…
