Yes… we should totally waterboard this guy…

I saw this sign while I was driving through Los Angeles. I just think maybe they could have worded it a little better.

Things that can go horribly wrong when you take photos… part 12…

b-1

Technically, the only thing wrong with this picture is that the subject… me… is a little off center. But the thing that really went horribly wrong here is me…

b-2

The picture is in focus, the background is lovely. My daughter took a very nice photo. But there I am, being goofy again.

b-3

I don’t really have any advice on how to solve this problem, other than to say that you can try asking goofy people not to be so goofy, but I know that never works on me… so…

b-4

If you know someone like me, just let the goofy happen… and then delete the pictures when they aren’t looking.

Things that can go horribly wrong when you take photos… part 11…

b-2

We have talked about focus, and about what happens when your camera is moving too fast to take a good picture… like when you are in a car… but now, let’s talk about motion blur. That is when you are trying to take a picture of something that is moving… like a baby… when you are bouncing him on the couch.

b-1

Even a small amount of motion can cause the blur. You can use this to take some awesome pictures. If you take a photo of a person running in front of something, like trees, for example, and you keep the camera still, the person will be blurred, but not the trees. I mean, this can also depend on how you focus the camera too, but you see what I mean. If, however, you move the camera to follow the running person, then the person will be in focus but the background will be blurry.

I suggest you practice these techniques… but maybe not on a baby that is bouncing up and down towards and away from the camera… because in that case, your camera has no idea what you are trying do.

Learning how to use the focus on your camera is probably a good idea.

Things that can go horribly wrong when you take photos… part 9…

It is always tricky to take good photos of things that won’t stop moving. Birds are a challenge. So are active kids. As for this guy, I suggest giving him less coffee… or getting a good tranquilizer gun.

Things that can go horribly wrong when you take photos… part 8…

a-1

One very important lesson of good photography is ‘framing’ your subject. This refers to where the subject ends up appearing in the photo.

a-2

Now, I am not saying the subject has to be right in the middle of the photo. There is an art to the placement.

a-3

You can always crop a photo to center the subject later. Conversely, a bird can be off center if he is in some interesting foliage, or a cityscape might fill the entire scene, requiring you only to figure out how much sky you want to have showing. But, while taking pictures, you should give some thought to what appears in the image. If you are doing a picture of just one head, you should try aiming the camera at roughly the center of the face.

a-4

Now that is a good photograph right there.

Well, now you are way too close… take a step back. And get a new camera lens. And get me a Band-Aid while you are out shopping.

Things that can go horribly wrong when you take photos… part 6…

No, there is no reason to panic. You were just too far away from your subject. Next time, move closer, or have them move closer… or use the zoom lens.

No… there is nothing wrong with your camera, and you didn’t have your settings wrong. Sometimes, you just took an ugly picture because the subject your were photographing was ugly.

Things that can go horribly wrong when you take photos… part 4… *Do not drive and take photos at the same time*

a-10

Yes, that is indeed a cool picture of the new section of the Oakland Bay Bridge. And yes, I was driving while I took it. But I was a trained professional driver for six years, and, when I do take photos while I am driving, I just pick up the camera, point it out a window, and click the button. I do not take my eyes off the road.

This series of posts is meant to be a humorous look at things that can go wrong… of a technical nature… when taking photos. The last thing I want you to do is get in an accident.

But I do like the way the lights look question marks.
