Why the hell is it that every time there is a TV show that uses the word ‘manly’, it is always a show about something stupid? It shows guys eating way to much, or doing something idiotic and dangerous, or being sexist jerks. Is this all men are?
Hey, a guy painted the freakin’ Sistine Chapel ceiling.
A guy designed the Taj Mahal.
We have been responsible for some of the world’s most beautiful and moving poems and songs and works of art.
We like flowers and sunsets.
We like hugs and puppies.
There is more to us than appetites, muscles, and the incredible ability to succumb to peer pressure and injure ourselves doing something moronic.
In fact, I would go so far as to say that the majority of men now… and it wasn’t always this way… are more interested in art and culture and creativity than we are in sports and cars, drinking too much and eating mass quantities of beef… especially if you take guys with blogs into account.
I will even go so far as to say that the kind of guys who are depicted in those shows are the kinds of guys that I… and my fellow enlightened males… have very little interest in hanging out with… other than as the occasional means to act like cavemen and blow off a little steam… because I am honest enough to admit that there are times when we all need to be ‘those guys’…
But it isn’t who we are.

But do you remember to put down the toilet seat?
I remember HOW…
I rarely watch TV…but I hope more and more male characters will be portrayed as creative, sensitive people. I think a lot of what’s on network TV panders to a certain class who might relate better to those so-called “manly” characters – but for those of us more culturally inclined, (such as you and I) lol we are drawn to characters in literature and art and blogs, for instance. And you, Arthur, are in all of those things as a matter of fact… so you win the title of least likely “manly man!” Now aren’t you just thrilled to know that?? Ha!
uh…
Ha!
wheeeeeeeeeeee
Television, now there’s a cultural wasteland… but I digress. Good post.
thanks
I like sunsets and long walks on the beach….plus semi-automatic weapons and things that go boom. I am complex like that.
😉
we all have our duel… uh… dual natures…
Ha! So true!
yup
“Why the hell is it that every time there is a TV show that uses the word ‘manly’, it is always a show about something stupid?” – Because they produce what the audience demands. I wonder about the viewers more than the producers…
That is a lot of wondering
Sometimes I get stuck with nothing better to do. When client wants to pay me to sit and do nothing so they can check their email for instance then I sit and wonder… Hee hee
That is also a good time to read my blog…
In this situation I had no net access because I’m doing a migration on the computer that she “had” to have at that exact moment. It’s their money but I’m not used to getting paid to do nothing.
I wouldn’t mind trying that
It drives me nuts because I know they are nearly six months behind on this migration primarily because they can’t seem to comprehend the importance of it.
I hate it when that happens…
Me too, I’m a dive in work 24/7 and finish the project kinda person.
I am… uh… not like that at all… ha
Hee hee
yeah, you can laugh.
I think our society has changed but the majority of men still play by the old rules….Which is why they appear to be so stupid.
There is some truth to that
I think you of as the new-age dude, sensitive yet moustachio’d, manly yet fully open to a good man-hug or kiss. Perhaps we should really consider you a renaissance man, yo.
Also, per comments above, never judge a book by its cover, or a man by his penis. I had to say that, I just did.
Look who comes out of the woodwork… (ha) for a socially relevant post… maybe I should do more.
I love your socially relevant posts, actually. They appear to me to be more socially relevant than the serious posts that are intended to be socially relevant (you know, the dire ones or the really scathingly satirical ones). Anyway, dude, I have to say, but let me be clear: schmack!
Well I do both kinds…
You’re highly versatile.
I can’t deny it
I thought you were him for Trendy Trent?!
huh???
He revealed on Gibber today that he is actually you.
we will see about that…
We will?
won’t we?
Sure
are we?
I didn’t see it…
It’s on yesterday’s prank post
I saw it
I found it…
Aha! He funny
yup
They’re playing to the lowest common denominator and it is so sad. Good rant, though. Rock on, maybe somebody in charge of a TV show will hear it.
On the other hand, that Man Show on Comedy Central had girls on trampolines… so… uh…
Well, I didn’t want to do a shrill comment of “Welcome to our world,” documenting all the insulting female stereotypes that have polluted the airwaves… another example of playing to the lowest common denominator (the stereotypes, not my hypothetical comment). Oh well, I suppose if you enjoy watching the girls on the trampolines — makes my boobs hurt just thinking about it!
I was merely pointing out that that was a thing, not supporting it…
Reblogged at The Prozac Queen’s Court!

Reblogged this on The Prozac Queen's Court and commented:
I know I have a lot of feminist-esque stuff on my blog, but that doesn’t mean I can’t give good men a shout-out too. The only thing my husband does on this list is eat a lot of beef and, well, I loves me a good steak too. He even likes hugs and puppies, although we’re both more partial to kittens. The rest I left behind when I dumped my college guy. Anyone who’s met him knows it wasn’t much of a loss.
Enjoy the reblog!
Thanks.
Who watches this stuff? So much of it is rehashed old ideas. …Imitations of the same old drivel.
They are marketed at the dinosaurs walking among us.
I really hate these shows (I actually don’t have a TV for that matter). You can’t create balance with bashing.
I think it isn’t bashing so much as just aimed at a dying segment of manly society.
You’ve heard the phrase “if the shoe fits, wear it” I presume…
(Actually, I think those shows are all watched by binging high school and college boys. Who else has that much time to waste?)
You may be on to something there.
The quality of tv anymore really speaks to the ridiculousness of many people, male or female, at least in my eyes. My best guess at the caveman aspect of men in tv shows these days is some sort of requital to the overly dumb, flaky, and child-like aspects with which women were portrayed in television and advertising in the 50’s, 60’s, etc. Not that I make this a major study of mine, but some of the advertisements for products were incredibly sexist just a few decades ago.
I’m glad that some of those misconceptions have changed, though there is plenty of room for continued improvement. Hopefully the same will be for the “idiotic men” of shows now.
We can hope, I suppose.
