Everyone on the planet should drive Highway 1 at least once in their life. It follows almost the entire coast of California and for sheer beauty it will compete with any drive of similar length anywhere in the world…
I have driven it in a lot of cars, a few motorcycles and even hitchhiked it back when I was a crazy teenager. It never gets old.
The part I drove yesterday… a lot of it in the fog… between Santa Cruz and Morro Bay, is one of my favorite parts.
The thing is… and this is one of the good kinds of things… the beaches in Central and Northern California are not the same white sandy beaches with palm trees and rolling surf that you see down at the Southern end of the state…
Oh no, this is cold water, and booming, crashing surf and jagged rocks and wicked currents… often pounding on the base of sheer cliffs…
That is really far down to those rocks… See, I was once again risking my life to bring you these pictures, hanging over the edge like that over and over…
Oh, I know where you may have heard me mention Santa Cruz before. Read that post about the time I almost drowned… I think it was called; ‘What a way to go’ … (still the best near death experience story I ever heard, even if it did happen to me… and it has Santa Cruz in it, as I recall)…
There is a rugged beauty to this area, and as is usual where sea and sky and land all meet, the weather is ever-changing and the views will never look exactly the same twice.
Oh, that one up there was my second sunrise… between to peaks in a green valley… because the high mountains and the shifting fog and clouds kept making the sun start the day over and over again.
Okay, well, we still aren’t even close to being done with this, and this is just the first day of my adventure… well, the first day I am posting about, even though it was really the last day of my adventure… which was yesterday… because I am doing this whole trip backwards… because I am a freakin’ Time Lord…

I have driven on this hwy! Mind you it was almost 48 years ago, OMG I am getting so old! I took a car vacation with my parents to LA, San Diego, Tijuana & then up to Spokane, Washington! We drove the Pacific Coast Hwy. From what I remember it was very pretty. I was very calm (which was totally unusual during a car trip with my parents) because I was beside the big ocean.
Not a good trip for kids who get car sick though…
Love this!! Brings back memories and I want to go back now!
do it…
Thank you for going to such daring extremes so us lowly peasants back in blog land could join you on your most recent adventure! Seriously – beautiful photos! I like the map as well. We drove from San Francisco down to San Diego and then ended the trip in Tucson. Too bad I didn’t know you back then, I would have visited 🙂
that would have been cool
Maybe someday – if I ever make it back there. And speaking of visiting – you haven’t been over in a long time. Are you mad at me?
I just got home… from an adventure… I am still unpacking and stuff… and editing and writing and publishing and eating and picking up kids and… stuff
Do you know how hard it is to blog between clients at work?? And do all of those things you mentioned as well? (Yes – my arms are crossed and I’m tapping my foot) Of course guys are challenged when it comes to multi-tasking…ok well when you can possibly find the time, come visit me for some shining rays of health in your life – who doesn’t need that?!
ok
Ok what?

Thanks for risking your life to bring us these pictures. They really showcase our California coast.
