I would say torture is always bad and it is important for us to recognize that. I would concede that it may from time to time be a useful form of bad.
I guess it is all about who gets to decide when it is good or bad, or how often it should be used…
In the business world we hire an expert in a field then we trust them to make decisions regarding areas of our business that we are unqualified to make decisions on. When it comes to our health we put our lives in the hands of medical professionals. When it comes to matters of war we must find a way to do the same. The experts are not flawless they will make mistakes, evil people will make their way into trusted positions but the alternative to trusting the experts, is to decide each issue “in committee” and that wasted time spent explaining to people with no idea what is going on why something needs to be done can get people dead. I find it easier to trust our soldiers than to trust our politicians.
I find it impossible to trust Dick Cheney
I think he would fall under the politician category. It’s been my observation that to make it as a politician a whole lot of soul selling has to take place.
That might explain a few things…
Through they years I have backed several promising young politicians and they can take off at the local level but inevitably there comes a day when they have to make a choice between doing what they believe is right and doing what must be done to get the support of the leadership. If they choose what they believe is right they are generally never heard from again. If they are willing to “compromise” to advance their career then welll then it never stops.
I have seen this happen too.
I haven’t given up but it is discouraging
I know what you mean.
When someone is entrusted, there comes with it accountability. But thus far I have not seen Cheney & company held accountable. If they are not held accountable, then we the American people will be held accountable. We citizens will pay the price one way or another for our CIA having tortured, because ultimately we hired them. There’s no getting around accountability.
That is why I do so many posts about him… he took away our moral high ground.
Maybe Dick Cheney is a genius. Surely he knows that the best way to turn at least 80% of Americans against torture is for him to defend it.
Nobody listens to him, because hearing him talk is torture.
