Adventure day… part 1… (or): Little trains, big views…

Most of you will remember that the last time I went to the Bay Area, I went on an adventure day with my daughter and the step daughter of a good friend of mine. We went to that fancy old hotel in the Berkeley hills, and I shared some nice pictures. In keeping with that tradition, I took the girls out for another adventure day… which I have broken into two parts… or maybe three… and don’t forget I am still doing the pictures of this trip in more or less reverse order… so this is about the later part of that day…

We went on a train ride.

a 1 a 1No, that adorable old engineer is not a giant… the train is just really small. The little steam train is located in the hills above Berkeley in Tilden Park. It only costs three dollars for a ticket, and it is fun to do.

There is the little ticket office, just beyond the little railroad tracks.

And the little train chugs along under redwood trees that are smaller than usual. They aren’t dwarf redwoods or anything. They just aren’t that old yet.

This is an awesome thing to do with small children… not that 15-year-olds are small, but they enjoyed themselves. I do not know if they have these small trains in other countries, or it is a particularly American thing.

If you ever have a chance to ride on one, just do it.

And because the train is very near to my favorite view spots, we stopped to take a few photos of San Francisco…a 1 a 7

The thing is… there is always at least one thing… that because San Francisco is famous for its fog, you can’t always see San Francisco that well.

But it still looks cool.

We have small trains at some of our water slide parks, but they at least have passenger cars with seats, you don’t have to sit in freight cars. You may have a great view but we’re more comfortable sitting in the train.

  2. That train looks like a lot of fun. There is a similar train in the book I am reading…Stephen King’s, “Dr. Sleep”. Of course it’s Stephen King so it doesn’t bode well for what happens on the train.

We have those trains though rarely in such scenic settings, usually at a petting zoo or some kind of lowscale theme park. Actually it think there is one near a lido in Northwest London – it’s a bit fancier, but I have seen those diddy ones about too.

My home town has a dotto train that goes up and down the seafront http://www.visiteastbourne.com/Eastbourne-Dotto-Trains/details/?dms=3&venue=3412706

All I can think of with little trains is The Dark Tower series by Stephen King. Creeeeeepy.

I like the little train rides at zoos. Kind of a back stage tour.
