I mentioned that Maui has more climate changes in a smaller area than any other place I have ever been. They say that Hawaii is the only place in the United States where you have four seasons all in the same day. The whole island is only 48 miles long… this time I Googled it… my guess in the earlier post was way off. But there are two mountains on the island, one at each end. Technically, they are volcanoes, one inactive and the other taking a break from eruptions for now. And these mountains cause the moist clouds coming in off the sea to pile up on the windward side and dump lots of rain. The mountains also keep the lee side… that is a sailor’s term for the side that is out of the wind… of the island very dry.
This phenomenon accounts for the fact that you have tropical rainforest and jungle on one side, and an actual desert on the other…
So you may soon start noticing that I am sort of stalling. I have been sorting the pictures of our trip, and there are a lot of them. Last night, my wife saw me doing that. She was not happy that I am sharing the pictures with you before we look at them together and share them with our families. I apologize both to her and to you for any confusion and lack of consideration on my part. I will try to keep you entertained as best I can while keeping her happy.
