Don’t worry, the last three pictures will explain the title…
So I went with my daughter Mollie and my friend Andy up to my favorite view site in the hills above Berkeley.
You may remember that the last time I went to the Bay Area to visit my mom, Andy and I also went to this particular view spot, and all we got was pictures of really thick fog. This time the weather was a little more cooperative.
In fact it showed very well what I like about this spot. If you stand there to watch a sunset, it will change every minute. The colors in these first few shots are just crazy. The sky was like copper and gold melting together.
San Francisco looked like some lost city from the Arabian Nights.
Then the colors muted a bit, like a water-color painting left out in the rain.
Pictures never really do justice to a good view and a good sunset.
But I never get tired of this one spot.
It is just plain magical. And just down the hill a little bit is the Lawrence Hall of Science, a great place to take kids. Outside the science museum there is a large open area with a fountain and a life-sized model of a whale. I was going to get a picture of Andy crouching over the whale’s blowhole like he was giving it mouth to mouth resuscitation, and then Photoshop it onto a beach and then post it and try to convince you all that my friend had saved a real whale. But there were kids climbing all over the whale.
However there is also a giant strand of DNA made of metal and no kids were playing on that.
Mollie challenged Andy to a race where they each started at opposite ends of the DNA and had to wriggle their way down the whole thing. Andy only lost by a little bit. Quite impressive for an old guy. It would have killed me, or I would have gotten stuck and they would have called the fire department to cut me out with the jaws of life. How embarrassing would that have been?
Now you know why I called the post what I did… except for one thing. Andy just became a Grandpa!
Also not bad for an old guy. But that ties in with the whole DNA theme as well, if you see what I mean.
So I have one friend near my own age who just had their first baby, and another who just had their first grandchild. Ain’t love grand?

Great Photos, Art. And I understand the attraction to the view.
It is just such an awesome place to go!
Oh yeah. I took some photos at the Science museum, but nothing so spectacular occurred. 🙂
It is all about having a story to tell… HA!
I like your stories.
YAY!!!
Some people from my college recently went to san francisco on a (very expensive) trip. Seeing those views, i’m may just be very slightly jealous of them. It looks wonderful up there.
If you ever get a chance to go, you should.
My first vacation (I’m calling them vacations instead of holidays now) when I move to Canada will be to the West Coast.
We will have a pot of Earl Grey ready!
Ugh!
Boddingtons?
Plum Pudding?
Yorkshire pudding?
Bangers and mash?
How about we take you out for Mexican food and a marguerita?
First two no, then it gets good, love yorkies and bangers and mash (that’s why my new blog is called Bloggers and Mash, but I figure you knew that)
I’m going for a Mexican tonight – for free as I’m a mystery diner in my spare time. I have to trek into the City where all the suits reside….

Ummm… I didn’t make it to a Mexican fooderie when I was in London, but I can only imagine how authentic it is.
Hah! The owner is basing it on street food so it’s not tex mex. She won Masterchef in the UK years ago, making a fortune now, she has TV shows etc.
But is she Mexican?
No, she was born in Cheltenham
Ha…
Wahaca??? They grow some good… crops there. Or at least they used to.
Alas not in this one
Ha.
We will show you what Mexican food is.
You mean Taco Bell? I’ve her of it 🙂
Oh… well… maybe there is one or two other places…
I bet they are great, I’ll look forward to it.
You should.
That actually warms up the cockles of my heart – I used to live with the same view for a couple of years…
Everybody should live with that view for a couple of years. The world would be a better place.
Arthur,
Dude, you’re all love, aren’t you…
Le Clown
Not all… but the biggest and the best parts…
Arthur,
…and funny.
Le Clown
That means a lot coming from you. Thanks.
so time for you to have another…lol
I could do that… if it were only up to me… I raise great human beings.
ha where there’s a will there’s a way…lol
hey check out my post today, you’ll see a pic of me on my dirt bike. just shortly before my minor accident that put me on crutches for months. lol i haven’t been on it for a few years only because we’ve had no place to bike but this summer i hope to resume learning!
oky doky
I went… and I made a funny comment and it froze my computer. Did you get the comment? I had to close your post because my little wheel just kept spinning. I called you a dirt devil… because you are on a dirt bike in the dirt and they are also little vacume cleaners that pick up dirt.
These views are the kind to make me stay in place for a very long time!
Like a deer in headlights???
More like a Zombie stuck in place!
I thought vampires were the ones who had trouble with the sunsets…
I just meant the brainless part – not an actual zombie. When I see something this beautiful & peaceful, it’s like my brain leaves my body & I cannot move or do anything else.
But if I were an actual zombie I think I would only come out at sunset because I would be afraid someone I know would see me!
I hope you never see a sunset when you are crossing a busy street…
I’m smart enough to wait till I get to the other side of the street before looking at the sunset. I’ve learned my lesson, some people just love their horns don’t they?
If they are devils…
