Those photos I played with in Photoshop and removed some of the colors have created something of a stir. So, in my ongoing effort to make this an interactive blog, I am going to let the crack squirrels run with this concept…
Take this picture of a little back ally in Venice… oh wait… I already took this picture… (ha, see what I did there?)… Remove some of the color and it changes the entire feeling of the picture…
The untouched image is already beautiful. I think I have an artist’s eye for spotting good places and things and people to take a picture of. I suppose this is why photography is considered an art form. But some photographers work primarily or exclusively in black and white. Google Ansel Adams and look at his stunning pictures of Yosemite done with no color. Have we just become used to the idea that black and white photography has its own merits? Is it just a personal choice for each of us? Let’s discuss it… we have time… the crack squirrels like this idea…
Just to perfectly honest with you… and I do try to always be… I totally stole this idea. We were in a Panda Express restaurant the other day and there was this poster of a river and a bridge and a Chinese temple, and only the temple was colored, the rest of the image was black and white. So there, I am not taking credit for a stolen idea.
Also, Photoshop doesn’t really do ‘black and white’… it has a menu option to alter the mode of the image and one of the choices is ‘grayscale’ which removes all the color information… and which looks like black and white to me… but might be completely different… and I am too lazy to Google the answer.

I like the first one with the gray and green – amazing how changing the color does create a whole new feel for the photo.

I’m in Pittsburgh again, but this time to visit my husband because he’s within driving distance. Lazy day – it’s 86 degrees!
wow… warmer than San Diego.
What keeps the water out of the buildings?? How deep is it?? You can’t build a building in the water, can you???
Google it… the whole city is built on wooden pilings…
huh! I guess I always thought there was land under the buildings… and a series of canals running through the land…..
nope… well there is… about twenty or thirty feet down…
I think black & white portraits are absolutely stunning! I prefer color in landscapes.
maybe I should do this game on some faces too…
The picture where only the river is B&W could pass for full-color. The river just looks polluted.
I noticed that… although the actual green color is a little scary too.
I named them:
1. “Sunshine Ahead” or “Color Around the Corner”
(I notice the sunshine ahead and buildings’ shadow only when the water has color.)
2. “Aged Venice”
3. “Dead River”
now we have a whole new game…
