Once again I came up with a brilliant and seemingly harmless idea… to help us all be more sarcastic… and once again I am causing havoc and we might all be destroying the interwebs…

So you know how in my last post I was aiding the spread of sarcasm by suggesting that we all type ‘<>’ before and after any sarcastic statements so people would know we were being sarcastic because they haven’t yet invented an actual ‘sarcastic font? It was supposed to look like this: <>Was this a brilliant idea or what?<>

And my idea works… sort of… I mean, you can see it working in this post… and in the post I did a while ago. But here’s the thing… because there always has to be a thing with me, you know that… my idea does not work in comments.

Go back and read the comments on the post I did earlier where I introduced the idea. If you read the comments, you will see that some of them make absolutely no sense at all. Now usually, comments on my blog make at least a little sense. But not some of these. And there is a reason for that.

It turns out that the < and the > symbol, when typed together on either end of a sentence, are actually part of some coding language… and it makes the words in between them vanish…  yeah… you heard me… like a freekin’ magic trick.

If you do not believe me, try commenting on this post and add a <> to either end… and see what happens. Just so you know, there are other symbols that if you add them together and then type both pairs on either side of some words, will make them turn into bold font… or italics… or maybe some other stuff. But I am a computer moron. I don’t know why it works in the post but not in the comment boxes.

And please do not play around with this new knowledge on my blog. I have already almost burnt down the interwebs at least three times, and I do not want to piss off the overlords…

Often, the missing comments are the funniest and most sarcastic of all!

I think one star-thingy around a word, used like quotes, makes it show up in *italics* and two of them on either side makes the word **bold**

I could be wrong or it may just be based on theme. That’s the only trick I know.

I learned that those two symbols, the > and the < (I'm doing them backwards in the hope that what's in between them doesn't disappear) when I typed the word "sigh" surrounded by those two thingies (let's call them the greater than and less than signs) and the word didn't show at all. Just some crazy html thing.

What happens if you type a : and a )? What the heck is that thing 🙂 and why is it showing up everywhere on Facebook? (You can see, I’m not a computer genius either. I did not discover how to do this until this year. 🙂

  11. wait… I tried typing a comment using a bunch of spaces between the words to look like things were vanishing, and they all got bumped together… what is going on???

It works. I was attempting to tell you that you are a genius and this is a great idea. But, it disappeared into the matrix. Hence, my attempt at a sarcastic insult was eliminated by the internet guardians. Wow, that’s deep 😱

  13. Well, Art, I’ve been waiting and waiting, and you didn’t reply to my last comment.

(Oh, wait, I think I put at both ends of the comment …. )

Look at that – twin curvey brackets totally work. Also, I just got a semi.

  16. Trent Lewin's avatar Trent Lewin says:

    Holy crap, it vanished again!

Look what you sent and did! I tried doubling down on the ‘s this time, no luck.

((this is both an informative and excellent topic)) take that!

  17. Trent Lewin's avatar Trent Lewin says:

    <>

I doubled the parentheses! I said “parentheses”!
