Democrats in the distance…

Democrats seem to be intent on distancing themselves from the President and most of what they have achieved since the Bush years… which mostly involves fixing all the problems those years left us with.

We have steady job growth, a growing economy, a strong stock market, lower gas prices, a medical care system that, while admittedly getting off to a rocky start, is now actually working, and Bin Laden is history. Yeah, I can see why you would want to ignore all that.

On top of all that, the upcoming midterm election is shaping up to be a disaster for the democrats. And it mostly seems to boil down to fear… fear of Ebola, fear of ISIS, fear of immigrants, fear of change.

Hey, you know what you should be afraid of? The fact that republicans are changing voting laws to make it more difficult for lower-income people to vote… the people who vote against them. And gerrymandering…  the reshaping of districts to keep republicans in power. And they have huge corporations, the same ones that get tax breaks given to them by the republican party, pumping billions of dollars into winning elections on every level, using some really underhanded tactics. The republicans keep accusing Obama of being a socialist… but what is less American that stealing elections through deceit and manipulation?

So stop being afraid of being linked to a party that has actually done a lot of good things. Stop throwing each other under the bus. Grow a spine.

Well put, Art. The folks who vote based on ignorance and irrational fears deserve what they get — if only we didn’t get stuck with it too.

  2. Ugh. It’s so frustrating how the Dems just play right along with the conservative talking points. “Obama bad? OK.” I mean, I don’t agree with everything he’s done as Prez, but geez, you’d think he’d lied about getting us into war or something.

You tell ’em, Art. I am aghast that the Republicans are likely to gain share in the House and take over the Senate when they have been nothing but obstructionists for the past six years and their only objective is to block any initiative Obama puts forth and to stand in the way of progress. And yet, people are out there voting these candidates with unenlightened self-interest into office. It seems that the Republicans have a much better spin machine than do the Democrats. All that has been accomplished, despite almost insurmountable Republican obstructionism, seems to have been forgotten and replaced by the fears you have mentioned. WTF?

    • The republicans are good at getting people to vote against their own interests. How the hell do poor Southerners get conned into voting for them? They, the poor Southerners, will get right in front of a camera and say they are against government helping people while they are on government assistance programs.

How does the President stay president if he loses majority in both the congress and senate? Here in Canada, the leader of the majority party gets to be Prime Minister – we, as a population don’t vote for him – only his/her constituents do- so it’s whoever leads the najority who is PM.

    • List of X says:

We just elect a president separately so the opposition party can block anything he tries to do from Congress. Also, the way our voting districts are set up (mostly by Republicans), the Republican party has a majority in the House, even though more people voted for Democratic party candidates. And Senate is even worse – because each state provides 2 senators, a tiny state matters as much California with population larger than 20 smallest states combined – so technically, a 10%-15% minority is enough to win a majority in the Senate. The president is the only one who more or less reflects the will of majority – and even then could be elected with a minority vote.

    • We have perfected a system where a party can be proud of the fact that they kept a lot of things from being done just because they could, not because it was good for the country.
