Well, I managed to quit smoking… sort of… After smoking Marlboros from my early teens through my thirties… and then somehow getting switched over to Newports because my wife smoked them back before our first kid was born… those menthol smokes that at first taste a little like those candy cigarettes they used to sell… I recently… like a month ago… switched over to those e-cigs…
I have to admit, the electronic cigarette did take the stress and jitters out of quitting. But now I have gained like 15 pounds… in one freaking month… and after working for a year to lose 50 pounds, I am not happy about this.
Also, there was one other time when I gave up something because I thought it was a healthy choice. I gave up butter for margarine. And then found out that it wasn’t really any better for me at all.
So if that happens again, I am going to blow a gasket.
I have been thinking that it might be funny to get some rolling papers and wrap one around my fake cigarette so I can walk around looking like I’m getting stoned… just for the hell of it.

I’m happy to hear you are trying to quit smoking! I have heard e-cigs are not as good as they are purported to be though.
You might want to try stick pretzels – they give you something to hold & put in your mouth plus they’re low in calories!
but they taste funny when you light them…
I smoked from the age of 9 to the age of 39 and in that time, the heaviest I reached was 133 lbs. I gave up smoking 8 years ago and now I am 172 lbs. That’s nearly 40 lbs. Nearly 3 stone. I have gone from a 30″ waist to a 34″ waist. But on the place side, I enjoy tastes more now
It does make for a tough decision…
Yes it does. I sometimes wish I still smoked so I could lose the weight, but I have other things helpoing witht hat now anyway lol
Life is just so complicated.
Yes it is
yup
Good luck, Art.
thanks
I’m rooting for you Art!! I quit about 10 years ago and it wasn’t easy, I used the Commit lozenges, took care of the oral thing for me, along with some nicotine. I had been smoking off and on for almost 40 years and had had enough. I know it’s hard, hang in there!
I think that’s how long I smoked for too… thanks.
I don’t like being called a quitter. Unless it pertains to me quitting smoking. Which I did on July 3, 2003. I quit cold turkey. I’m pulling for ya!!
Thanks
I am trying to quit once and for all. The problem is: I live deep in tobacco country, currently. I’m not joking when I tell you: there are trucks pulling trailers full of tobacco leaves past my front door, every day right now. Tobacco leaves blow off the trailers and land in the street. They’re laying everywhere. The vape thing definitely helps.
I cut and hung tobacco in Cynthiana, Bourbon County Kentucky one season… I did a post about it… long story, and not one I can give all the details of on this blog, but the post is good.
I’m from Virginia, I am SUPPOSED to smoke. It’s a patriotism thing. Tobacco was the basis for the colonies and the whole United States. What was I going to do, not smoke?
But did you ever harvest it? That was some hard, dangerous work.
Nah, never did that. That is some dangerous work. If you touch it too much, it’s poisonous, right? Does it saturate your clothes and gloves at some point? That must have been rough.
we didn’t have gloves… but the dangerous part is hanging it in those huge barns that look like aircraft hangers.
I set it, topped it, cut it, hauled it, hung it, stripped it, and warehoused it. Many years ago in Greensburg, Kentucky.
That’s what I’m talking about.
You cut and hung burley? More stuff we have in common!
I did… when I was 17, for one season… got stuck in the hottest part of the field, with a rusty knife… and I walked the beams in the hanging barn too.
I quit smoking 30 years ago (yeah, I’m that old) and I did put on some weight because eating replaced smoking as something to do. But it’s usually just a short-term thing and a little self-discipline and exercise will take care of the weight gain. As to e-cigs, I don’t know. I’ve never tried them, but I wonder abut what is in the vapor and whether or not it is as harmful (or maybe even more harmful) that what is in real cigarettes. Anyway, congrats on quitting and good luck keeping off the weight.
And Newports? Really?
The best thing about Newports was that when people would bum a smoke, and then they wouldn’t take one because of what it was, I just told them I was so sorry I didn’t carry their brand. And maybe they should pick a higher class of person to bum off of. I just worry that my metabolism has changed drastically.
What a coincidence, my face also does that expanding and contracting thing too. Only I can’t blame it on cigarettes. More like the dangers of donuts. Hang in there.
I am… thanks
Gotta love the gif. I’m pulling for you, Art. I smoked for only about 3 months in my teens and got lucky an met a girl who did too. I told her she looked stupid smoking (suave, huh?) and when she quit I got sucked into having to also. Read absolutely NOTHING into “sucked into” No incentives, inducements or rewards were bestowed. Like Jack Link’s, it was cold turkey jerky all the way.
Good on ya
You could start munching on veggies…
I do…
there you go and nothing else but..
HA!
May the force be with you.
uh… thanks
