Now this is how you set the bar for romance when it comes to asking a lady out on a date… okay, I’m a little nervous about how smooth this guy is, because the lady in question is my 15-year-old daughter… but still…

Why yes, that is indeed a handmade paper Tardis you see before you…

The doors aren’t lined up because of the way I was holding it… it isn’t sloppy workmanship. The details are actually quite impressive… especially if you consider the fact that the guy who made this isn’t even a fan of Doctor Who.

Maybe I should back up to the beginning… which should be easy… now that we have a time machine…

Most of you will remember that Mollie, my youngest daughter, started dating her very first boyfriend about, oh, six months ago. He seemed like a nice kid… right up until he just disappeared at the beginning of summer, leaving Mollie baffled and alone.

Then school started again, and when I was driving her home she always waved at this one guy if she saw him walking. She said it was a guy she had been friends with for a while. I didn’t think anything of it.

The she gets in the car the other day and she is all… I want to say ‘glowing’… but whatever, she looked pretty happy. And she showed me her Tardis…

You can see on the back that this is her very own personal one.

Now I know a lot of you ladies who are fans of Doctor Who are already excited about where this is going… So I will cut right to the chase… when you open the Tardis doors…

… there is a little, smiling Doctor in there, and a card that says: ‘Will you be my Rose, and travel to Homecoming with me?’

Yeah… he asked her to the homecoming dance with style… and art… and romance… and he took the trouble to find out something about her that, even if he wasn’t a huge fan of himself, he knew it meant something to her.

Okay, he got a little lazy and didn’t color the box blue. This offends the artist in me a bit. But as the dad, I am relieved… because if he had colored it blue, I might already be working on ways to get him to marry my daughter, and I haven’t even really met him yet.

Trust me, this is a far cry from my usual attitude towards guys who want to date my daughters.

Anyway, to all you younger guys out there, I hope you learned something from this. Be sweet. Be inventive. Be creative. Be artistic. Yes, you can be yourself… but if yourself isn’t at least some of these things… keep working on yourself until yourself is…

Awe! And your Daughter let you put it on your blog? I would have been super embarrassed.

  5. And more importantly: be sure to master those skills in any communications the girl’s dad may be privy to.

So I guess that makes him the second Doctor, since the first one disappeared.

    • HA… I get it. Yes, this is the regenerated Doctor… who isn’t a real doctor… but plays one on TV… but hopefully doesn’t start playing doctor with my kid… at least right away… sigh

I like your list of qualifications young boys should master. This could be used for everyone. (I might steal this for future reference. Hope you don’t mind.
    Here’s to raising daughters. 🍷)

I actually think the white Tardis is more appropriate – after all it is a vehicle for the delivery of an invitation and as such should should have the form and details of a Tardis but not the the color – i.e. see inside for the true reason for the Tardis’ appearance. Or this Tardis is a blank page that you have the power to paint whatever color you want. Honestly Art if he were asking you for a date, I’d agree: it should be blue, for after all aren’t you a little blue? But for your young daughter, it should be white – reflecting the youth and happiness.

Oh, does your daughter know you are blogging about her and her new found interest? 😀
