A tale of two men and the sea…

Okay… not really… But it is a story about a little adventure that me and my friend John Sullivan had years ago. I was driving back from San Francisco and my day hanging out with Willie… and his parents… and as I neared the Richmond bridge, I spotted this little island…

a 7I was travelling East, and you can see the little island just to the right of that call box sign. Hold on, let me get a little closer…

a 8Okay, there it is. Back a few years ago, John… that’s my friend who is dead now, and you might remember the pictures of his memorial tree that I posted just a few days ago… and I decided it would be fun to take my family’s old inflatable kayak out in the bay. This little boat, about 6 feet in length, had various air-filled chambers and was fun to paddle around in.

But this little red rock island was pretty far out in the bay. And when we got about half way there, we discovered that one of the side pontoons had a slow leak. And we were slowly sinking. We did come up with a way to salvage our expedition. We took turns sliding into the very cold water and blowing up the pontoon. With our mouths. And the bay was rough. And did I mention it was cold? And there are sharks. And this mean-looking sea-lion that kept popping up and looking at us as we got closer to his little island home.

It’s funny how sometimes it is the little mishaps that really make a fairly normal day into an adventure.

Well, we have reached the end of my trip to the Bay Area except for one last thing. Tomorrow I am going to post pictures of some watercolor paintings that I have been working on at my mom’s house. Then it is on to the Weird Al concert, or maybe something else. Who knows? You think I plan this stuff?

That doesn’t look like the kind of water I would venture into. But you got there and back?

Do you ever sell any of your art? I am looking for paintings as I am decorating my house. You should sell on Etsy

Great story! How far is this from San Quintin? 🙂
I don’t comment often, but I’m always reading! Your articles about Willie were exceptional. Reminded me of my wonderful nephews.

    • Thanks. You can see San Quentin from that bridge and the island. The prison is at the West end of the bridge with its own exit. When we went to high school, our school was painted the same color as the prison.

Buying paint in bulk seems to be a priority no matter what psychological effect it might have on students. they couldn’t get paint to stick to my high school. 🙂

One of my favorite sayings is you can’t make this Sh*t up. Life can be an adventure.
