I recall the time we travelled from Nebraska to Smith River, CA. Every step was planned by my father. We ended the first day at 3 in the afternoon, with a good five hours of sunshine left. The second day, same thing. We took an hour or so for each meal because my father didn’t like eating in the car. So much wasted travel time!
When we finally got to Smith River, my mother asked my father if he had my brother’s address. I bit my index finger so hard I am lucky I didn’t bite a chunk out of it in my effort to endure a full bladder and the answer to the question: “I thought you wrote it down….”
Yes, everything planned to the coast for three miserable days of travel, and no one had the address of our final destination. I swore I’d never travel with family again!
On the trip home, my father drove away from the gas station leaving my sister in the station restroom. Fortunately, someone asked where she was, we realized we left town without her, turned around, returned to the station, and arrived just as she came out of the restroom. I don’t think we ever told her what happened.
I feel like I saw a movie like this…
I imagine, after spending so much time with you, the family needs to unwind – while you continue to unravel.
