Wait… you know that was sarcasm, right? We’ve been to the moon, why can’t we invent a sarcasm font? But anyway, I grew up in Berkeley, California during the 60’s and 70’s. Believe me, I know liberal white male guilt.
But I was finally getting over it. I had convinced myself that, while white males have certainly brought more than their fair share of suffering to this planet down through history, my own conscience was clear… (hey, I just noticed that conscience is spelled: con-science… I wonder what the hell that means???)… I mean, I felt horrible about slavery, but I never owned a slave, and, being adopted, for all I know, my relatives fought on the right side of the civil war. I have never abused or exploited anybody of any race. I raised my daughters to judge people individually. I have always believed that women should be paid as well as men, and should be able to hold any job they want. And I actually thought we were making progress.
Now Trump has managed to not only find all of the white males that I was so ashamed to be associated with, but to coalesce them into an actual movement… a movement in the wrong direction, but a movement of sorts. So I guess I have to go back to feeling guilty about the very people that, by all rights, I should have the most in common with.
Oh boy.

Actually, I feel no white guilt at all. My family only arrived to this continent in the end of 20th century, so I do not come from either slave owners or those who fought against slavery. Since it would be ridiculous to take credit for the latter, I’m not going to feel bad for having the same skin color as the slave owners.
And the fact that a lot of white people support Trump doesn’t make white people who don’t guilty by association.
I agree, although the fact that your family never owned slaves doesn’t mean that they never in all of history participated in any kind of cruelty. My only point was that there are way too many white males who will publicly support such a hateful person is shameful.
Since I’m even alive after thousands of generations of humans and billions of ancestors, I think that there’s a 100% chance that my ancestors participated in some kind of cruelty. If I’m supposed to feel guilty about it, so should everyone.
You don’t understand Berkeley liberal guilt at all… HA!
I haven’t spent as much time in Berkeley as you did, which apparently wasn’t enough to shake the feeling of being the most conservative one there. 🙂
It has that effect on many people
This may sound silly Art – but trust the people will choose as well as they can. A democracy often produces huge surprises. Going into our last election the polls showed that the conservatives would have a minority government. It turned out that they lost by a landslide and gave the Liberals a majority government. The same happened in France last year – the far right anti-immigration nationalist conservatives topped the polls by a wide margin and then the voters gave a majority government to the middle of the road party that considered all; cultures and supported exports/imports. Trump is failing now and every day reduces his support.Add that to the fact that many who are thoughtful voters will not show their stuff until they vote – call it the silent majority.
Doesn’t change the fact that millions of people are proudly supporting him.
I agree that democracy can produce huge surprises. But these kinds of surprises can be both good ones like you mentioned, or they could be less than pleasant ones: George W. Bush, Brexit, or Hitler as an extreme case.
My digestive tract also produces surprises… not all of them pleasant
Sounds like you got democracy in your digestive system.
or anarchy
or anarchy
Shhhhh X! I’m trying to console Art.
yeah… sort of…
Hit it again to the point😊
I keep hitting him… but he is still there…
