Seriously, try to say: ‘vicariously very seriously’ five times very fast…
Yes… I know… it is a picture of San Francisco as the fog creeps down the streets between the high-rises… but where, you should ask yourself, was this picture taken? Well, let me tell you about that. This was how my daughter, Mollie, and my friend’s step daughter, Lucy, started off our adventure day. We walked out on the pedestrian pathway slung to the side of the brand-new Oakland Bay bridge…
There is a nice view of the old bridge, which they are in the process of tearing down… it was damaged in that big earthquake we had during the World Series, you might recall. You can also see Treasure Island over there. The bridge passes through a tunnel dug through the island.
On the way to the bridge… and it was a long way, let me tell you, I had that weird feeling you get when someone is watching you, and I looked over at this warehouse, and sort of freaked out. There were dozens of guys in hard hats watching us walk by. Hey, guys, I know they are beautiful, but they are only 15-years-old… so get back to work… wait a minute… let’s zoom in…
Turns out they were just a bunch of cardboard heads with hard hats perched on them. Some of them were also wearing sunglasses. I don’t know if this is like an unofficial museum of hard hats, or somebody’s idea of a joke, but it sure worked on me.
Then we walked some more… a lot more…
At last, we got to where the bridge was actually over water… which, it seems to me, is where bridges should be.
In fact, we ended up pretty far above the water eventually.
The girls got tired and gave up. I kept going. I couldn’t even see them anymore. But I know that some of you… not all of you, but a few… count on me to share my adventures because you are too busy to have many of your own. So I took one for the team. I walked until my hips hurt.
I mean, maybe you don’t care about this at all. But if you like bridges…
Or maybe you like birds. That is a cormorant.
I think he was drying his wings… or pretending he was Batman.
From where I turned around, it was a long way back to where we parked the car. And over there, way in the distance, where that arrow on the left is, you can just see the Claremont Hotel up in the Berkeley hills. You know, the place where we went during our adventure day the last time we were in the Bay Area.

This whole thing just looks like a road in the middle of a desert or something. It doesn’t even look like a bridge!
If it wasn’t for that huge bay underneath of it… HA!
Which we can’t see because of the way you took the pics I’m talking about! 🙂
Right…
That is the one thing I always have to keep telling myself when I am out on a walking adventure. However far you walk … that’s how far you have to walk back. You are a far better walker than I, I probably would have stopped with the girls.
I really just wanted a few more pictures for the blog. How silly is that.
I’ll never get over just how blue and cloudless the skies always are in your photos. Amazing.
Those are the days I get my camera out.
You misled us!
I wouldn’t show pictures of a cloudy day to my English followers… that would be cruel.
The things you do for us, Arthur! They do not go unnoticed, let me tell you. 🙂 I love the line of ‘cat call’ construction workers – that’s clever. I couldn’t have gone up so high on that bridge – no way no how!
It is pretty well made, but I know what you mean.
Lovely!
it is, isn’t it
You my friend, are a sucker for your Art. Which is why I love you so much.
That fog pic is surreal.
I am a sucker for myself… which is Art.
I’ve heard that about you.
from me
Vicariously very seriously…vicariously very seriously….vicariously very seriously…curious so cereal…whoops, I think I fractured my tongue.
I hate it when that happens
I especially like the first one — love watching fog!
Fog is awesome. I have done a bunch on posts about fog.
We saw a cormorant on the Swan Boat. I think HastyKid got some good pictures of it, posed also like batman. Very cool bird. Never been to San Fran but I have a cousin who lives there, so I guess I have no excuse other than the bucks.
I think they have one of those duck things in San Francisco… I should go on that someday.
I don’t know anyone else who would sacrifice their hips in such a manner for their devoted followers. Your dedication and selflessness is duly noted and will be mentioned on your judgement day (if we’re asked, that is). Thank you.
It took some of the sexy out of my walk for a day or two… just sayin’…
It’s really hard to tell on the blog.
I really need to learn how to post videos
