Okay, one more post, and that will take us to the end of our first day on Maui… HA!

After our long and exciting drive on the road to Hana, Maui, we at last reached our destination… Hana. It is a very small town, and very spread out. I don’t even really have any pictures of it, although my wife might on her phone… when I get to those pictures. You could just Google Hana. It is a charming little town nestled in the hills and jungle along the coast. The foliage is so dense that you can rarely see more than one or two buildings from any one vantage point.

But our hotel… the Hana Kai Maui… was awesome…

a 1 a 1That is it in the distance… on that black-sand beach… oh yeah! That is also a picture of my wife too… she is over there to the right. She doesn’t really want to be in the blog, but since she is so covered up in rain gear, that should be okay. The beach is actually larger black stones over closer to the hotel. The stones get smaller and smaller the further down the beach you go from the hotel until they are just black sand. Here is the view from our balcony…

a 1 a 2Nice, huh? Yes, it rained a lot while we were there… which was only for one night… but as I said before, you don’t get jungle unless you are willing to settle for some rain. Here is a picture of me standing on our balcony…

a 1 a 3Okay, it isn’t the best picture of me, but it is a nice silhouette of my cheek mole. Our room was quite lovely…

a 1 a 4But the deck was my favorite part…

a 1 a 5The first picture in the post, the one of the black beach, was taken shortly after we arrived. We went for a walk on the beach. And the first thing I found on that walk was a blowhole…

a 1 a 6I like that picture… I got a little wet taking that picture… and of course I had to have my wife take a picture of me standing beside the blowhole…

a 1 a 7Oh yeah, look at me in my action/adventure tourist gear… what a goober… but I was having so much fun. This big chunk of black lava sticking out into the tumultuous sea was right below the hotel. We met these two cool locals who were fishing from these rocks with multiple poles. It turned out that they fished late into the night, because we could see their flashlights moving around in the darkness. I took this picture from the same place…

a 1 a 8Yes, it was windy and rainy and a little bit chilly…

a 1 a 9And the surf was really booming. Of course we had to walk down that beach. It was our first day on Maui!

a 1 a 10Later we went into town and got some frozen lasagna and cooked it in the full kitchen in our hotel room. Then we enjoyed the sunset…

a 1 a 11Okay, the clouds sort of hid the sunset… but we saw plenty of sunsets on our trip. And as you can see from this picture taken the next morning, the clouds sort of feel like they are an important part of the landscape in Hana…

a 1 a 12Besides, the view from the other side, out our front door, was less inspiring… unless you count our cool, monster-vomit-green Mustang…

a 1 a 13

Okay… I hope you join me tomorrow for lots more pictures of the rainy side of Maui… and jungle, and animals, and waterfalls and beaches… and stuff.

I bet you slept really well with the ocean noises!

Ok here is a challenge for you. Write a horror flash fiction piece for the picture where you are pointing down into the hole. I have a fear of dark holes, the scene in Flash Gordon where he has to stick his hand in the hole about killed me.

  3. A rainy day on Maui is better than a sunny day anywhere else.

That black beach has gotta be some kinda hot when the sun is shining. Neat blow hole Mister – in the rock, I mean. ha!

Wait, this is just the first day??? By my calculations, you’ll be doing these posts for 5-6 more months.

  7. LOL on the silhouette of your face mole! You are too funny! Very nice photos. What a wonderful trip you had. Looking forward to more pics.
