Why should you read my book?

I mean besides the obvious reasons such as making me rich and famous.

Well, let me see if I can convince you.

The main character is me. It is just me in another dimension, another reality. And who doesn’t want to learn more about me? I know the first rule of fiction writing is ‘don’t write about yourself’. I did it anyway. I am that self-absorbed. See, you are learning about me already.

It’s funny. Really funny. I have read it hundreds of times… for editing and continuity purposes, I’m not that self-absorbed… and it still makes me laugh.

Because I need you to go to Thebookpatch.com and Amazon.com and write good reviews… so I can sell more books. Remember, I need to pay the editor… and the cable bill… you want me to have a TV don’t you?

I make fun of everything that people do. Especially the stuff they take too seriously. The aliens provide a nice opportunity to look at human behavior from an outside perspective.

It is an exciting adventure. Arthur battles well-armed alien space pirates on an ancient alien space station with a crazy band of humans and aliens armed only with knives. And they put Arthur in charge? Are you kidding me?

This doesn’t take place in some far off distant time. It is just a few years in the future. You will be able to relate to this.

This is just the first book of the series. I already have the next three done. And I am working on the fourth. So you will never need to worry about running out of stories about me. I am watching out for your needs.

Arthur is the least likely, most reluctant hero in the history of literature. He is lazy, opinionated, sarcastic and more than a little strange. Hey, I said he was me, didn’t I? When our adventure begins he is working as a custodian at a Texas bar on an alien space station. Weird things seem to happen around him. And somehow he keeps ending up being the only person standing in the way of some terrible calamity. Does he make plans and strategies? No. He just makes it up as he goes along. Which is how I wrote these books, by the way. Fortunately he has a loyal and brave group of friends from all over the universe who stick by him. He also has a lot of luck.

I have been writing this adventure for almost four years. If you have found anything in this blog that makes you smile, then I can only assure you that you will find something equally enjoyable in these books. So far I have invented over 100 characters… I mean just the ones that play an active part, not just background characters, there are millions of those… and 36 alien races… once again, these are key players… just to entertain you. And the adventure grows with every chapter. In the next book Arthur is going back home to the San Francisco Bay Area, and once again things are going to get really weird and Arthur will have to step in and thwart the plans of an evil human/alien intergalactic Corporation, some vicious mercenaries, and aliens with bad intentions. In later books he fights tie-dye-wearing assassins, and has to lead a small fleet against a massive invasion from another dimension. All while being really funny. And did I mention that one of the enemy fleet’s captains is another Arthur from that other dimension? You get to read about me fighting myself. Doesn’t that sound like fun?

You can enjoy each of these stories by themselves, but the main plot is one continuous story. I don’t want to give away any more right now, but trust me, by the end of the fourth book you will not believe the things that have happened to Arthur. But beware of false trails. Nothing is as it seems. Just when you think you have something figured out, you will find that it isn’t what you thought at all.

Okay, if I haven’t convinced you to at least give my science fiction novel…

You’re giving a lot away here, is there any more to read?

I’m there, brother. Let me finish my current book ( also an author’s self-published work ), and then I’m all over yours. Anything that includes my old stomping grounds, SF Bay, has got to be good. Lazy heroes are my style too.

Who said fiction shouldn’t be based on something true? I disagree completely. Everything in fiction should be truth based to an extent, especially the characters. I think you’re just too happy right now to realize how ridiculous that notion is. Winnie the Poo was even based on reality. You’re not doing it wrong.

    • I am just repeating something that a lot of people told me.

They’re liars. All great fiction is based on someone true in some way. Especially movies. Look at the list of best pictures from last year. The few that are not directly based on a historical event/group of people are probably based on the writer in some way. Taxi Driver was about Paul Schrader’s struggle with loneliness. The Shining was based on Stephan King’s alcoholism. Inspiration comes from real life. Completely making up a story without any personality to yourself or someone you have met means it’s probably pretty weak.
