Bay Area Dreams… Part 2

Just to make sure you do not think I am exaggerating about the fact that there are no rules when it comes to how you can decorate your house if you live in the bay area, here are a few more pictures to drive home the point. This sculpture is in front of the house just two houses away from the blue art house featured in the last post, the one with the car painted to match the house,

I have always liked this piece of art. It looks like a dragon with a particularly vicious tapeworm…

Sort of… But whatever it looks like to you, the fact that the blue house covered in hieroglyphics is right around the corner from the crazy dragon statue, and both are found in a very nice part of town, just sort of sums up the attitude of Bay Area residents.

Perhaps a mile from where these pictures were taken, there are two houses set side by side on a beautiful little tree-shaded street. The two owners of the homes in question have been gathering works of art in their front yards for some time…

I guess I will just show you the pictures and let you draw your own conclusions…

Either you like this sort of thing or you don’t. But I hope you will admit that hanging a bunch of hard hats from a big tree expresses a sort of whimsical charm.

An elephant made of rope and yarn. By itself, that would look silly sitting in your yard. But when you put it by a skeleton guy in a jet sled… well… now it is art…

And if you put the skeleton guy by a big head made out of janitorial equipment, that is just… even more artsy…

I could go on, but I think you get the idea… or else you never will…

Is this whimsy taken a step too far? Is this art that got carried away with itself?

Maybe the point is that it doesn’t matter. That it is your house, and you should be able to do what you want. If the neighbors don’t like it, there are other states to live in.

Besides, I really really like the samurai…

My neighborhood is definitely lacking. I like the people with the faces on their house. I’d like to have one of those faces sticking out it’s tongue with some wild, wiry hair and roly eyeballs at the foot of the driveway to Hippy Hill.

  2. My sister the artist would be in hog heaven if she lived in this neighborhood. LOL

This home looks like the place Battle Bots go to retire.

  4. You could make the case that the artsy neighbors are the ultimate recyclers in making something decorative out of all the objects they use. If that’s what the outside looks like, I have to wonder what the inside of the house is like. Whoa.

To each his own, huh? The jury’s still out, but the samurai? That is so you,
