If Romeo and Juliette had been snails…

a 1

Now that I look at the picture, I am not 100% positive that they are dead. Do snails sleep on their backs? Do snails sleep at all? Do snails dream? Maybe they are just tucked up nice and tight, way down in those shells. Maybe they are having a sleepover. I don’t know the story. Maybe one is dead, and the other just lay down beside that one to die also. Whatever happened, there must be a story behind it.

Maybe one of the snails got the other to go to his place.

Oops! lost track of where I was and missed an edit. Oh well, thanks to WordPress happiness warriors ignoring me, all my efforts to get an edit function added to their formats has been a fail.

Very dead! There would be a protective cover (“operculum” – had to look it up!) over the aperature if there were still living snails inside the shells, there would be a covering over the snail’s aperature (“operculum”, which provides further protection). All snails don’t have them, however. Also, were there living snails inside the shells, they most likely would be upright. If not upright, the interior of the shell you can see would be nothing more than a thin space near the rim. On the other hand, in the spirit of Romeo/Juliet (snails are hermaphrodites, complicating the analogy… LOL!), perhaps they died in the embrace of snaily love! Ick!
