Elephant seals can look very cute and cuddly…
But stay away from the males… especially during mating season… those are just two teenagers. I think the big bulls can weigh like a ton or more and crush a car.
If you look closely at that picture up there you will see four sets of males battling each other.
When the young ones do it, it is just practice for later battles. It looks sort of adorable.
But they are biting each other and smacking each other with their heads. When the big bulls do it, blood flows and it is ugly and vicious.
Meanwhile, the females and younger pups just rest in the sand.
There is lots of yawning and stretching and digging sand up into the air to cover themselves to keep from getting sunburned.
But even there, nature is always a harsh mistress… that buzzard is just looking for any pups that die of natural causes or get crushed when the big males start fighting… or for any adults that get taken by the Great White sharks that lurk in the waters offshore… there is always something left for the scavengers.
Hey, it’s tough being an animal.

That’s crazy! What if you were just sitting there in the sand on the beach and they all hung out with you? I want a seal blanket party!! They wouldn’t just wander up and bite me would they??
You could try it and let us know…
They are very stinky, but cute in a kind of blubbery, gelatinous way. Great post!!!
Thanks… I have an alien in the third book of my action/humor sci-fi series that looks like an elephant seal… in a pink track suit
In a pink track suit? That’s great!!!!
… smokes a cigar… leads an alien supremacist movement… actually a spy for an alien race from another dimension bent on invading this one…
Ooo. I have to check this out!!! Sounds like something right up my alley!!!!
book three is being edited right now…
although book two takes place in the Bay Area for the most part… with an aliens space craft duel under the Golden Gate and Oakland Bay bridges… and a hostage crises in San Francisco’s City Hall where the Character… who happens to be me… sort of… has to get into a hand-to-hand combat duel with a huge alien who looks a little like a hippo… but it’s funny
Did you cuddle with them?
uh… no
Why not?
good question
I know!
me too
Beautiful, cute, and adorable. But I’ll bet one of them could bite your leg off.
the leopard seals are worse… and I met one of those… close up… the day before this… which will be soon in my backwards adventure…
Aw, I love these! I could fit right in there 🙂
Hey, I have something to email to you…can I get your email, por favor?

ok
Loved the way you narrated this – it was very funny and sweet as well – like a children’s book. I suppose “there are more of these down there” will be your response…I think you should do more of these with your adventure pictures or any pictures, really.
there are more of these down there
🙂
ha
That was random – oh I just saw my comment. You use the ha like a greeting at times it seems!
I use it for greetings, emphasis, to denote humor of varying degrees, to answer when I am busy or don’t know what else to say or am answering a ton of comments, or as a sigh or an exclamation point.
Guess you really get your money’s worth out of that word then, eh? No hesitations there
I also use it to hesitate… ha
Yeah, I bet Great Whites like big sea mammals.
they really do
Very nice, Art.
thanks
