A literary interview with a young reader…

Me: Hey, Willie, whatcha got there?

Willie: Just the most awesome book ever. And guess what! It was written by a good friend of mine.

a 1Me: Well it does my heart good to see a young person who likes to read.

Willie: Oh, I do like to read, and this book certainly quenches my thirst for fine literature, but it is the original artwork that keeps me coming back for more.

a 2Me: Can you tell us a little about the book.

Willie: Sure, I would love to. At first glance, you would be forgiven for thinking that this is just a cute children’s book about monkeys. But as you read it, you find that the words are carefully crafted to open a dialogue in the reader’s mind about a wide variety of topics. It is important to stimulate critical thinking at a very early age, you know.

a 3Me: I’m sure that’s true. What sort of things does it make you think about?

Willie: Oh, about what makes us different and what makes us the same. About how we all like different things. And about how a monkey in a space suit could possibly eat a banana. I like the way the author doesn’t give you the answers. You have to think about it yourself. I mean, it seems so simple and obvious, but a lot of thought went into that.

Me: So you would recommend this book to other young readers?

Willie: I sure would! It is funny and thought-provoking. And as I said, the original watercolor paintings are wonderful. I love the polka dot monkey, and the one of the dad who looks just like a gorilla makes me laugh every time. And did I mention that the guy who wrote the book talked to hundreds of kids to get quotes for the book? In a way, this book was really written by us kids. You gotta love that.

Me: Well, thank you for taking the time to talk with me, Willie.

Willie: No problem. Oh, if anybody wants to get the book, they can go to my friends blog and order it there. There is a picture of the book over on the sidebar to the right, and they just click on it to go to the link. He wrote a science fiction book too, but I am too young to get most of the humor in that one. Okay, see you later, I am going to eat some sand now.
