During my years as a supermodel, I did quite a lot of work for the Pentagon. This started during my stint in the Navy. They did a series of recruitment posters to show the glamour of service at sea. If you are wondering why I look so young, it is because this is way back in the 1970’s when I was 17 years old. But I think they made a tactical error trying to make boot camp seem romantic. There are some things that even my incredibly handsome face can’t  help sell.

Here are just a few of the shots used in this series.

There was the ‘learn how to make a garbage can shiny’ one…

And the ‘learn how to make your bunk’ one…

And the ever popular ‘you get to dress like a milkman’ one…

That is me on the right. I don’t know if these posters helped raise recruitment, but I am proud that I got to do my part.

Later on the Pentagon even used me in posters to help beef up recruitment for the Army. I doubt if the wording on this poster did anything at all to help lure people into the Army. As I recall, it said something like;

Join the Army, and the odds are that you will never be involved in a chemical attack, but even if you are, we have you covered…

See, they have these plastic uniforms and masks and stuff to keep you safe, but they didn’t want me to wear the mask and hide my face, so I don’t think the point really came across. But I do have my portrait hanging in the halls of the Pentagon to this day, because they hired an expensive artist to paint me as a Special Forces guy for some posters, and they didn’t want to just throw the painting away afterwards…

Now I do not want to diminish Hastword’s contribution to the Armed Services. She also did some modeling work for our military…

And I am willing to concede that she probably lured a lot of men into service of one sort or another…

So I would like to thank her for her patriotic duty…
