Oh, it’ll be “too soon” to talk about the solutions. You know, Senators and Congressmen owe the NRA for accepting the blood money from the NRA, so how can we be so ungrateful for their inaction!
All three of the people “representing” me in Congress don’t get it: the Second Amendment doesn’t protect the rights of shooters in schools to acquire the tools of murder, and school shooters-to-be need to be denied access to the means to kill human prey.
Remember Sandy Hook? That little asshole not only had no business having a weapon, his shithead mother (who died by his hand, coincidentally and ironically enough) gave him a handgun for his birthday the year he killed 20 six-year-olds and six teachers and administrators! ENOUGH!
And, after all the token “thoughts-and-prayers” and “now is not the time to talk about gun control” comments, the NRA’s Wayne La Pierre will begrudgingly make a public statement that will include the standard mantra: a good guy with a gun is the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun, and then…nothing. Right-wingers in Congress will spit out their next usual response: banning certain types of firearms will lead us down a slippery slope towards a total banishment of all firearms. That nothing was done after the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012 proves that even the shooting deaths of children won’t sway gun rights proponents. So, the debate essentially ended right there.
Maybe if some countries started issuing travel bans, or at least travel advisories, to their citizens about the U.S., we’d see some action in Congress. Maybe, but don’t count on it.
The number of times a good guy with a gun who wasn’t a trained law enforcement officer stopped a bad guy with a gun can be counted on one hand.
After Sandy Hook, I thought, “This is the one event Congress can’t ignore! America won’t stand for it. We are better than to trivialize the deaths of 20 first graders.” It was one time the usually measured and thoughtful Barack Obama showed outright anger when the shameless, NRA_bought Congress failed to pass a law making that sort of slaughter less possible.
Of course, Congress is another animal, bought and paid for by the NRA. They bear the total responsibility for the thousands of deaths aided by irresponsible gun control laws and lack of controls on things like gun shows and private sales of murder tools. Their thoughts and prayers are meaningless, as helpful as their notion it is too soon to talk about this problem they contribute to by leaders and members voting the NRA agenda. ENOUGH!
I don’t give a spit for my Congressman, Adrian Smith, who is so solidly in the NRA’s control, they only have to spend less than $16,000 to own him.
I have no problem with people hunting or other legitimate uses of weapons, though I’d never have a pistol, rifle, or shotgun in my home. I do have a problem with the acceptance of easy access to murder tools by sociopaths like the fellow in Las Vegas who killed 58 and wounded 400 concert goers or this loser in Florida who just killed 17. He is too young to buy a beer or handgun in Florida, but not too young to buy a military-grade murder tool!
You are, sadly, right about nothing happening in Congress. That bunch needs to be voted out and replaced by people who love America more than the money special interests spend to buy them.
We need to get together and pay politicians more than the gun lobby.
I live in Texas and I can’t say enough bad things about my local congressmen or our two U.S. senators, John Cornyn and Ted Cruz. Cornyn is a bigot, and Cruz is a worthless right-wing ideologue whose sole claims to fame are shutting down the federal government 5 years ago over the ACA and a failed bid for the U.S. presidency. People have asked me how I could stand to live here. Well, for one thing, I can’t afford just to get up and leave. But my Spanish ancestors have been in what is now Texas for over 400 years. My Indian ancestors were here millennia before that! Together they gave this state its name. They established large, complex communities long before the likes of Sam Houston and others infiltrated the region from Tennessee, Virginia, or wherever. I’m not going to get up and run from those fools! My roots are firmly planted here, and they’d have to kill me to get me out.
Whenever people run for elected office in Texas as Republicans, they always broadcast ads that emphasize they’re a “protector of the 2nd Amendment,” each accompanied by a photo of the candidate and others (often their own kids) posing with rifles while attired in hunting apparel. They always seem to skip over the 1st Amendment, which guarantees free speech and the right to vote. After Obama won his first term, Texas led the way in conservative-leaning states aiming to make voting more difficult. It’s obvious they were appalled that a Negro (even a half-blooded one) actually could win the White House! So, they wanted to ensure that never happens again. They disguise it as protection against voter fraud, but even we moderate-minded folks see their true colors.
Yes, Obama showed genuine emotion and anger after the Sandy Hook shooting. But that was it. He really didn’t do anything more. Of course, it didn’t help that he was dealing 2 houses of congress filled with arrogant assholes doing everything imaginable to make his presidency fail, instead of trying to work together and make things better.
The severity of the economic downturn, for example, could have been lessened, if Obama and the Democrats spent more time finding out the (mostly criminal) factors that caused such a mess and if the Republicans had agreed to do the same. But the Democrats were more concerned with composing the health care law, and Republicans were more concerned with trying to prove Obama wasn’t a U.S. citizen. If anything, Ted Cruz isn’t a U.S. citizen! I don’t believe there’s any proof his mother was born here.
But no, nothing will change. The lack of action after Sandy Hook proves that even the shooting deaths of small children won’t supersede the right to own firearms.
That pretty much says it all, doesn’t it?
I have tried doing more serious, wordy posts about this. I just get too frustrated and angry.
Tell me about it! Once one posts things like that, the trolling begins, and the collective ignorance of the world pours out, adding to the frustration. I mean, I’ve had people call snopes unreliable, fake, but they quote some asshole with a blog, spouting out conspiracy theories and the Trump lies, as a reliable source. I can live without it.
We are living in the new fact-free world.
I live in a county where 74.6% of those who voted voted for the current person in the White House. I guarantee it’s a fact-free zone!
Oh man… that is scary. Do any of them admit they made a mistake.
You kidding? He absolutely could shoot someone in Times Square and they’d be OK with it. I thought Nebraskans were too smart to fall for a NY conman, but I certainly failed to get that right. I think this is a state where you could attach the Republican tag onto a pile of dog shit and they’d vote for it because it was a Republican turd.
Ouch… but yeah.
And, after all the token “thoughts-and-prayers” comments, nothing will be done. Maybe if some countries started issuing travel bans, or at least travel advisories, to their citizens about the U.S., we’d see some action in Congress.
That is a brilliant idea!
Yeah fuck the government!
