Ahhh… this is what a vacation in Maui should look like… two happy feet snuggling in warm sand…

Wrong! My size 15 feet are two big, fat liars! That is not what a vacation should look like at all. This is what a vacation should look like, from the perspective of your feet…

You see those two raw, bloody spots on top of my feet? I earned those. I earned them by wearing rented swim fins and swimming with sea turtles and octopi and reef fish. I did so much snorkeling that by the end of our trip, the top of my feet looked like raw sushi. Or is that a redundancy? It got so bad, I had to swim without fins the last day… but since size 15 feet are like fins anyway, no big deal. I could take a picture of my feet right now and show you that I still have scabs.

When your feet are not covered with swim fins, they should be wearing hiking boots, or tennis shoes… or a pair of these all-terrain adventure shoes…

a 1 a 3Yes, I know they make me look like a dorky tourist. But I could climb over lava rocks or sharp coral, I could wade in jungle streams or tide pools. I could walk on sandy beaches or muddy trails. I could do it all in the same day without taking them off. And I did.

Your feet should get up early and go to bed late. They should take you on adventures and explore wherever you are in the world… Your feet should be leaving footprints on a beach before the sun even comes up… before anybody else is awake… because there is nothing more awesome than a lone set of footprints on a tide-washed shore…

Especially when you can still see your favorite bar in the distance.

Yes, our fancy beach resort had these nice chairs for sitting in and watching the sunset…

You know how long I spent sitting in one of those chairs? About five minutes. Just long enough to take the two pictures of my feet in the sand…

Take good care of your feet. They are your ticket to adventure.

  1. Not the prettiest feet I have seen lately but I will let that go. It sounds like those size 15 feet of yours served you well during your vacay. You should really be kissing them – if you can reach them.

My son has size 14 feet and are also in desperate of a pedi. 🙂

I don’t know why we don’t think about getting our feet into condition before we go on vacation. I always go away, put on some sandals that are either new or haven’t been worn in a year or so & then try to do some sightseeing by walking around! By the end of the first day, I’m hobbling instead of walking!

This is a great adenture, reading about your travels. I’ve never been to Hawaii and likely never will, so this is a treat for me. Bring it on!

My feet are smaller than yours! And they are still a bit cold in the early spring. Man, Hawaii looks awesome, never been there myself. Can I go with you next time?

  5. Snorkelling is amazing I loved it when I was in Trinidad and Tobago. Now a days I wouldn’t go in the water, to worried about the deadly jelly fish or any jelly fish stings

  6. A vacation in Maui so wonderfully shared through photos and stories, has to end with a description and photo of the sores on your feet? Poor baby. I hope you recover soon, and can get back to “normal” life like the rest of us.

  7. True that! It is really important to take care of your feet. Especially, when on an adventure. It doesn’t matter how dorky your feet look comfortable, practical, durable shoes will be what makes your trip a winner.

  8. Maui is beautiful! I agree. Feet are made for being adventurous, for taking us on new journeys and exploring new surroundings. Not for laying around on the beach. That’s only fun for about an hour. Besides, I burn in about an hour anyway. I need to be moving around and constantly applying sunblock! Glad you had fun, sea turtles rock!

Don’t these sores attract sharks? On the other hand, if they do, snorkeling could become much more interesting.

I used to go to St. Pete beach a lot and I would walk from about the Coral Reef Beach Resort past the Don CeSar down to Pass-a-Grille beach in the late afternoon. It was between 2 and 3 miles. You tanned the right side going down and the left side coming back. It beat just roasting in the sand or around the pool. Pass-a-Grille had such a nice cozy feel to it. With the internet now, it’s difficult to keep places like that from being overrun and over-developed.

  11. Those foot sores look like stigmata…

simply beautiful. It is so not fair people actually get to live there.
