I kilt myself laughing… the final chapter…

As long as we are translating English sayings in Scottish, I thought it might be fun to try some expressions that are already a mystery to most people… at least you landlubbers… so let’s translate some nautical terminology.

————————————-

I have not yet begun to fight – Ah hae nae yit begun tae rammy

First mate – Foremaist pal

Man the yardarm – Jimmy th’ yardarm

Full steam ahead –  stowed oot steam ahead

Come about – Come aboot

Full to the gunwales – Stowed oot tae th’ gunwales

Walk the plank – Donder th’ plank

Make that line fast – Mak’ that line fleet

—————————————-

Well… that wasn’t as much fun as I thought it would be. It turns out that a lot of nautical terms are the same in Scottish as they are in English… because the English are famous sailors… and… uh… well… the Scots aren’t. So to finish up, I am going to just type in random swear words and naughty expressions, and give you the translations without telling you what I typed in.

Fell free to guess if you want.

But do not type your answers in the comments. This is a family friendly blog, remember?

———————————–

Boaby

Bugger

Winch mah bahookie

Hoor

Oral throwing a sausage up a close

Fud

Hurdie

Gobble

Plooter yersel’

Wee baby fishies

Mak’ loue

—————————

I didn’t make any of those up. But guess what? It turns out that a lot of dirty words are the same in Scottish as they are in English. But this time I suspect it is because the Scottish are the ones who invented them.
