Thank you for not panicking…

I know, I have been away for a couple of days. That is because I am back at my mom’s house in the Bay Area. This time I am armed… with my new Father’s Day camera. I have already enlisted the help of a couple of friends to drive me around so I can take pictures of all my old hangouts. When I get back home next week, I am planning on filling you in on some of the stories of my life… the carefree days of my youth told in story and picture. Try to contain your excitement.

I am back in my home town, so soon after leaving here, because Mollie is on a trip with her church youth group. She is in San Francisco right now, at a shelter where they feed and care for the homeless. I am worried about her, but I am proud of her too. I will try to let you know how that is going as the week goes by, but I am staying at my mom’s and Mollie is sleeping in the city with 20 other teenagers and a few adults. I am sure everything will be fine, but I helped them move their stuff to the shelter today, and it is not a nice neighborhood. So, fingers crossed.

You are a very large child operating a machine you do not know how to handle on your own.

I told myself I wasn’t going to go there. I told myself that repeatedly. Yet here I am, going there. I figure there must be like an exchange program or something. That has to be it. So the young’ens don’t have to worry about being followed home. Do the SF kids end up coming to your town to work at the homeless shelter? I mean, there have to be homeless there too after all. So why do youth groups always seem to be going away somewhere to do this sort of thing? Why do they not work where they are? I know trips away from home are fun, but… It’s just one of the many, many problems I have with any organized religion. And since the subject has presented itself here, guess I’ll open that can o’beans and ask you, as the father of one of those young’ens, just why did they go to SF instead of working at home?

    • I have asked that question repeatedly. It makes no sense. When Jess was younger, she went with the youth group to repair house in New Orleans, and that made some sense. They go to Tijuana and make houses. That is too dangerous now. It does seem that it makes more sense to have youth groups do continuing, sustainable projects closer to home. I guess that is why I don’t run a church.
