Yes, I realize that cruise ships full of tourists roving up and down the European waterways are not very likely to pillage and plunder anything more than souvenir shops and bakeries… but the name choice still seems a little weird.
I mean, you wouldn’t open up a Nazi summer camp… in Auschwitz…
Now, before you fly off the handle, I am not actually comparing Vikings to Nazis… although, in all historical fairness, to the people they visited, they must have seemed at least as bad… I wouldn’t be that stupid… mostly because I am fully aware that these warriors have achieved a level of respect and reverence, partly due to their brave, seafaring explorations and partly because of the fact that they are so far removed from us in time.
As an historical note, did you know that Vikings never wore the horned helmets we associate with them? Some costume person involved in an early movie about them added that little bit of costume, and the idea stuck with us.
If you ask me, and I know you didn’t, it would be cool if the Viking cruises used real Viking long ships… and the tourists had to row the danged things up and down the rivers… and eat and live like real Vikings… without the butchering and looting…

I dunno, add in the butchering and looting. You’ve seen the film Westworld?
I have… we are on to a new touristing trend
Yay \o/ <— waving arms in the air
oh yeah
I think they need to add another disclaimer to the cruise contract. I think the law firm of Hungadunga, Hungadunga, and McCormick might be up to the task.
They switched over to Errikson And Sons
I’m OK with it as long as it’s guaranteed only 3% Viking content.
It’s in the contract.
… signed in Monk’s blood…
Maybe these Viking cruise lines offer the same level of accommodation and comfort as real Viking ships?
one can only hope
Good that you mention the helmets. Though they are found in burial sites, they are usually ceremonial in nature.
According to my research, no Viking helmet with horns has ever been found. Nor an image of a Viking wearing them.
New post series idea: if Vikings didn’t wear horned helmets, what kind of helmets they wore?
mostly simple two or three-piece metal helmets… but just the rich ones… most wore leather… or none…
No, i mean like making pictures of vikings in different types of helmets – like Darth Vader helmets, pilot helmets, bicycle helmets, and so on.
ooooooh….
Ah, you’re right. I was thinking of the Waterloo Helmet, but that was Celtic as it turns out. Also, a lot more seems to have been discovered since I was in college. Neat!
I am just here to impart my wisdom… HA!
