Real life Barbie… part 1…

a 1

Now, before you get all bent out of shape, this is not a post making fun of the homeless. Homelessness is a real problem in our crumbling society of haves and have-nots. My daughters have been and are very active in finding solutions to this issue both through my wife’s church, Girl Scouts, and on their own. We give to overcome this scourge of modern life.

No, this is a poor attempt at shining a light on the fact that by manufacturing perfect little dolls toy companies are not only setting unrealistic images  of physical perfection for young girls, but they create a fictitious mental reality that glosses over the very real ugliness in the world. Also, they contribute to continuing gender role stereotypes that should be done away with.

Hmmm, Barbie makes a great homeless person. I applaud the work your daughters do with the poor. you know as far back as Socrates, 2,500 years ago, it was known that in a capitalist system wealth is gradually transferred to the rich from all others. It does not stop nor does it level out – it travels one way only and that is that more and more wealth belongs to a smaller and smaller percentage of the population. This is a basic tenet of capitalism. It surprises me that the US has not taken steps to adjust this as it inevitably ends in a revolution with lots of blood spilled. In fact an American think tank came up with this “surprising” conclusion just a few weeks ago. Duh! I believe that a capitalist democracy is the best political-economic system yet invented but it requires adjustment and maintenance to remain stable. Even Thomas Jefferson said that it may require the spilling of blood to stabilize the system. My point is that helping the poor is important and simultaneously someone should be addressing the flow of wealth. Bernie seems to be making a rough cut at this by proposing social health care and social education funding. His surprising popularity, even though in this political climate his ideas will prove impossible to legislate, is a sure fire sign that the public is aware that something is not right and needs to be addressed.
